Help Establish Lactation Rooms at the Atlanta Airport (Video)

It’s time to establish designated lactation rooms at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA). Currently, there are no designated lactation rooms for employers or customers at Atlanta’s Airport. Instead nursing moms have to call in advance to secure a private place to pump or breastfeed.

Airport officials also suggest that nursing mothers use co-ed family restrooms to pump and breastfeed that are located at the following concourses and gates: T-4, T-8, A-8, A-27, B-9, B-22, B-29, C-11, C-19, C-43, D-4 and D-32. While this is an option for nursing mothers, it is unacceptable.

Breastfeeding moms deserve a designated, safe, secure, and comfortable place to pump and breastfeed. Eating in the bathroom is gross! Why should we make our kids do it?

What moms are saying about their experience breastfeeding at HJAIA:

"I can remember walking around engorged trying to locate a place to pump when I was out and about. I nursed Madison for 14 months and wouldn’t trade a second of it for anything in the world!” – Tanya C.from Atlanta, GA

“I asked the Delta customer service agent to help me locate a lactation room, and that was the best they could come up …with. I had to sit on the cold, hard, granite counter so I could be near the outlet. Families, needing to use the room, knocked on the door the whole 20 minutes I was in there. When I exited alone, I got angry stares. That was one of the only moments I wished my pump bag wasn’t so discrete." - Erina T. from Savannah, GA

" 9 years ago when I was nursing Lawrence, I actually had to nurse him in the airport bathroom!! Who else eats in the bathroom?" – Shae P. from Atlanta, GA

What can you do to help?

Register on Public Square Atlanta as a “Helper”:

* Email Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed and ask him to speak up for mothers to have a safe place to breastfeed and nurse at HJAIA. Email

* Send Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed a message on Twitter @KasimReed and ask him to support establishing lactation rooms at HJAIA #HJAIALactivists

* Send a message on Twitter to HJAIA @Atlanta_Airport and ask executive staff to establish lactation rooms at HJAIA #HJAIALactivists

* Send a letter or call Louis E. Miller, HJAIA Aviation General Manager and ask him to establish lactation rooms at HJAIA: Department of Aviation · 6000 North Terminal Parkway Suite 4000 Atlanta, GA 30320 · Phone: (800) 897-1910

* Fill out this form and ask Louis E. Miller, HJAIA Aviation General Manager to establish and create lactation rooms at HJAIA

* Contact local news stations and encourage reporters to feature stories about establishing lactation rooms at HJAIA.

Under the recent health care reform act, employers are now required to provide a space (not a bathroom) for breastfeeding moms. Perhaps Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport can establish lactation rooms for employees and traveling moms.
