My son is 18 weeks old and has recently been reaching his hand under my breast and pinching me while nursing. He kind of "holds on" to my breast like a hamburger...for lack of a better description. While he is hanging on, he sucks very hard and pulls his head back while pushing and pinching my breast the opposite direction with his hand. My nipples are getting VERY sore and I am wondering if there are any creative ideas out there as to how i can prevent this?? TIA!

I know just what you are talking about! I love the hamburger reference, it sounds just like what my son did! He went through a phase where he really pinched, to the point where I had bruises on my breasts. I basically just tried to wedge the one hand that was on the bottom in such a way that he couldn't really move it, and the other I tried to hold. He seemed to like holding my hand, and that kept him from the pinching. Of course, now he hangs on to my hair and pulls, while he nurses, but that is way more tolerable for me than the pinching.

You may want to try a nursing necklace or some sort of toy that your baby can play with while nursing. My LO has a blankie she holds and messes with while she nurses. If we start nursing without it, she starts playing with me instead. Drives me crazy.

My daughter also uses the "hamburger hold" which I think is cute until she digs in her fingernails and starts pinching. I swear that her nails grow while I'm cutting them!! I use a nursing necklace to deal with the pinching, but my daughter also pulls her head back to look around while still holding on and sucking. I try to feed her in a room with no distractions or other people. I also don't talk and when she gets distracted and starts pulling away I turn her head back and refocus her on the breast and nursing necklace. I bought the necklace off ebay for pretty cheap. It is a wood circle and wood bead on a leather necklace. I find it very helpful, especially when I nurse in public under a nursing cover, which she likes to grab and expose me!. I just put the ring in her hand and she bangs that around instead under the cover.

YOur baby might teething, and when they sucking it hurts them. Teething tablets, or camilia might help. What you say it is a typical teething signs, if he hasn't done this before. :)))
