I had 2 very different experiences w/ this and IMO... both are ok. It just depends on what works best for you, your family, and your situation.

I had twins that slept 12 hour nights at 6 months... for a month. Then they were up once or twice a night. We started day weaning at 13 months and by 14 months they were sleeping through on their own (w/ absolutely no effort on my part). Dropped the last nursing (bedtime) at 15 months.

Then you have my son who only slept through the night (10-11 hours) half a dozen or so random times until he was 2. I started talking to him every night starting around 18 months telling him how he was a big boy and didn't need to nurse at night. Yeah, the stinker used to laugh at me when I said that. lol It took about 6 months to sink in, but finally it did. There were some nights he wouldn't wake to nurse. Others that he would wake, but I'd tell him it was time to go back to sleep. He'd either go right back to sleep, whine for a minute first, or start getting upset. If he started to get upset I'd just nurse him right away. The 'freak out' nights got fewer and fewer. For the past year plus (he's 3.5) the only times he wakes at night are for a bad dream or the need to pee.

Thanks, Teresa -- you've given me some hope. :) Some days I feel like I'm going to be nursing my 12mo son at night FOREVER.

Try letting him know your intentions for a whole day or two. Tell him that tonight he just has to roll over and go back to sleep because you will not feed him. Then just go for it. He will likely scream for a few hours, you could give him a little bit of water if you want and tell him to go back to sleep, but stay strong and know that it won't take more than 2 nights.

It really is up to you. I was done waking up every 2 hours or more by 1 year. My son was not using it for nutrition so I felt comfortable stopping (and I needed sleep after a year of not). I just stopped nursing him at night. I slept in his room the first night and next door the next. Then he was done. Good luck.
