How much water should bf 13 mo drink?

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

My son is just over a year old and is still breastfeeding 4-6 times a day. He's never had a bottle. He is still learning how to use a sippy cup but hasn't quite masterd it yet. With warmer months here I'm concerned about him getting dehydrated. Does anyone know how much additional fluids bf toddlers should drink?

My doctor told me to offer water as often as i can. At this age you could also teach him to drink from a regular cup when you're at home.

At 13 months your milk can still provide 'most' of the needed fluids, but certainly keep a sippy cup of water available for him to keep practicing and get a bit. He 'can' drink as much as he wants (as long as water is not replacing his milk or foods) at this age, but as far as how much he 'needs'... a few ounces is probably fine.
