Hypersensitive Gag Reflex

I was wondering if anyone has had the same problems as us?

My son is now 23 months and still about 80% BF.

He was diagnosed with hypersensitive gag reflex when he was about 11 months. We started introducing solids when he was 6 months old and he chocked on everything!! For months I was told to keep trying, give him finger foods and spoons to play with. He would never let anyone spoon feed him nor has he ever taken to a bottle nor dummy. They all make him gag.

The next stage for him was to chew food up and spit it out. (NO SWALLOWING)

He swallowed his first solid food when he could spoon feed himself at 17-18 months old. He can now eat but much prefer breastfeeding.

It has been a long, difficult and worrying process. I have been very grateful that I have always found it very easy to breastfeed.

I wish I had found this site earlier. Has anyone had similar problems?

my son is 3 and 1/2 and still nurses. He gagged a lot when he was little too. It was really difficult to put him on cereal at 6 months b/c he would gag all of the time. He still won't swallow meat unless really soft like pot roast. He won't swallow apples or crunchy veggies. He is still nursing and I think he prefers to do it b/c of his inability to swallow foods easily.
