I have a 16 month old and we are still breastfeeding very often. she doesn't really like real food that much and still wants to breastfeed more then eat normal food. I am living in Egypt but I am american I know from before when I had my son the Doctors told me to try to stop after 1 year but here they are saying well if she doesn't to eat normal food then keep feeding her. but on the other hand maybe she will eat more if she knows that is her only choice. I need some advice on what I should do. we are very close and I don't want to break that bond but at the same time me and my husband want to try for another baby as we want a child not to far in age and it is hard for us to get pregnant again well still breastfeeding if anyone can give some advice I would love it

thanks again

It is completely normal and healthy for a 16 month old to still be nursing, and still nursing a lot. Many doctors here in the USA are not properly trained on breastfeeding, and they just don't know about all the health benefits for both mom and baby. My LO just turned 2 years old a few months ago. She still nurses 5 or more times per day. 6 months ago, she still nursed 8 -10 times per day (24 hours). There are still days when she would rather nurse all day than eat solid food, but those days are becoming less and less frequent.

As for trying to get pregnant again....

Does your daughter still wake during the night to breastfeed? Many women find they can't get pregnant until baby goes for at least one 8 hour stretch without nursing. I was that way with my first. My first daughter started sleeping through the night at 17 months old. I got pregnant again when she was 20 months old. My husband and I didn't use any contraception at all from the time she was born.

If you don't want to wean completely, maybe night weaning would be a good option for you.

i am happy to know it is possible to get pregnant and i am same as you we have not used anything to stop it and we do want another. and i will try to do the night weaning at least i really love feeding her still and we both enjoy it. sometime she wants that only and no food it started to worry me but now i hear that it can be normal i am not so stressed.

There is NOTHING wrong with nursing a toddler. Unfortunately, many doctors aren't knowledgeable about breastfeeding. Weaning her won't necessarily mean she'll eat more. Toddlers are notoriously picky, nursed or not.

The nice thing about nursing a toddler is that there are no hard and fast rules. You can nurse her as much as you want or you can try and place limits. Either is fine.
