My mother was told by her doctor when she had my sister (early 1970s) to start on solids after 6 weeks! Wow, I'm really happy we're learning what's better for our babies as the years pass. I'm a big supporter of no-cereal-first-foods. Rice cereal causes constipation (it's a great food for when your baby has diarrhea), especially in breastfed babies. Fruit and veg, especially sweet potato, are the best first foods.

You're right, the info seems to change constantly. From what I've read, the whole cereal thing started years ago... I don't know, 50 or so??? When formula fed babies were the norm.. but formula wasn't as good as it is now. Many babies were becoming iron deficient and they didn't know how to get the iron in. So they started fortifying cereal and having parents add cereal early. The trend caught on. And there was no mention about what a breastfed baby needs vs a formula fed baby. And iron can be quite constipating.

I'm glad to hear that switching back off the cereal has helped. Every baby is different including what foods affect them.

Yes it could be the cereal he is eating. Cereal can be quite constipating. Try just fruits and veggies instead of cereal. There really is no reason that he has to have cereal. Cereal's are fortified, but if you're still breastfeeding, then he's getting all the vitamins he needs from your breastmilk still.

Lori, Thank you. Ive been reading a lot about what your saying....our babys really do not need cereal :) This is his 2nd day with no cereal and last night before bed we had a huge poopy diaper, which he did not struggle one bit pushing it out...did not even have to push :) Thanks again for your help. Even though I am on baby number 3, things seem to change :)
