Input regarding your public breastfeeding experiences

Greetings ladies,

I am a law student in the United States. Jacksonville, Fl to be more specific. I am currently a breastfeeding mother and I am writing my final paper supporting breastfeeding in public. However, I need some help from you ladies. I need some of your breastfeeding experiences that I can quote for my paper. If you are willing to help, I need an experience you had, how you felt after the encounter. Where you were and what year it was. Thank you in advance.

the first time i breastfed in public, my daughter was 5 days old. i was with my sister in a restaurant. i tried to cover up with a receiving blanket, but that wasn't enough for my sister. she was mortified, mostly that people may judge her! so she went to her car to find something for me to cover up with. she came back a short time later with a bright yellow table cloth with big purple grapes and vines and crap on it! it looked like the olive garden sign!!!!! she was no longer embarrassed, but i felt like i was wearing a neon sign with an arrow on it that said breastfeeding mom over here!!! i really think a little boob would have been less noticeable!!!

Thank you ladies for all of your feedback. I am very happy to hear that you are having great breastfeeding in public experiences. It has been so helpful for my final paper.

I live in australia. I get a lot of looks but I think its mostly ppl are like omg she is breastfeeding not bottle feeding as most mums bottlefeed in our town. I also get more women looking than men and I think older women seem more offended by me having my breast out in public as you didn't do this in their day and age. I don't just get my whole breast out either..i do it quite discreetly so its not really out there anyways. overall i dont care as my baby has a right to eat just like anyone else

Kate, congrats on the baby boy!

Ditto!!  :)

I haven't had any negative experiences nursing in public.  I've possibly gotten some looks, but I wouldn't know cuz I don't pay attention to the people around me when I'm feeding my son.  He was born in March 2008 and we've been nursing in public on a regular basis since he was about 2 weeks old.  Oh, we're on Kauai, Hawaii. :)

I haven't had any negative experiences. There have been a few times I was out with people I didn't know very well (friends of DH's) and had to feed DD (then about 4 or 5 months) and they were about to pray. They simply said, "Oh, the baby's eating" and went about their business (most people were holding hands but I couldn't). I may have gotten some looks, feeding her in public recently (she's almost 18 mo. now) but no one's said anything. I am wondering if I will get looks now though because DS was just born today and I am tandem nursing. btw the recent experiences were at local malls in Columbus, OH and so were the older ones...when she was 4 - 5 mo. that was 2008.

I live in the UK and am currently breastfeeding my 3.5month old. I've never had anyone say anything to me aout feeding in public but i've had lots of disaproving looks in places such as cafe's, shopping centres and even in the doctors surgery! I always nurse in public if i'm out as all the nursing areas are in with the nappy change and parent/toddler toilet area and i refuse to feed my little girl next to a toilet or stinky nappy bin!

I was at Sushi Den restaurant in Denver, CO in 2008. I was breastfeeding my 1.5yr old son and a couple next to us said how they thought it was wonderful we brought our son out with us and that I was breastfeeding him.

I have not had a negative experience either. However, I am prepared by having the CO State Law on breastfeeding printed out in my diaper bag. I am allowed to BF in any public place.

I've never had a negative experience breastfeeding in public. No one has ever given me a dirty look or said anything to me about it. My children were born in 2005 and 2008 and we live in Portland, Oregon... if that helps any. I believe that we one of the highest breastfeeding rates in the nation here so that may be why no one seems to take a second look.
