okay, you have my permission to laugh. My nipples were inverted. After I nursed my son, one popped and stayed out, the other one didn't. The more pregnant I get this time, the more the inverted one is in. What can I do, if anything, ahead of time to help pop it out for easier nursing. Or should I just use the latch assist? Thanks.

my left is better than right. I mean..it's OUT. my right one is shy. lol. i have shells from before, but didn't know when to start. I will ask her. I don't think i'm far enough to start it. I'm only 19 wks, but trying to plan ahead. I tried pumping with my son, but they didn't stay out long enough. it was a juggle to latch assist, and quick baby to boob. Pinching....not happening right now. My breasts are growing so fast, I'm two cup sizes bigger from pre-pregnancy and feel huge. I tried to get it out just to see what i'm dealing with and it was not happening. i had worn the sheilds when first starting with son.....holy wow did i leak everywhere. i had three pads at a time and a cloth diaper and still bent over and spilled into my laundry. I will try to find an LC at this hospital and talk to doc at next visit. thank you, sara.

There are lots of women, including myself, with this issue. Both of mine are now out for the most part, but the right is better than the left (and the left was more severely inverted so that makes sense). You can try getting a breast shell (not the shield). It's a little plastic cup that comes with a disc that has a hole for your nipple. You can wear them in your bra and it will gently encourage your nipple to come out. Make sure your doctor is ok with this, if you're high risk you may not be able to have the nipple stimulation. I would try pinching it to coax it out before latching. Or pumping to draw it out then latch baby on. I used the shield in the early months, but it caused me to have multiple clogged ducts and it was hard to wean her off of it. If you need to use it, go ahead, but speak to a LC first for other ideas to try. If they don't work then go with the shield.
