Irregular periods while breastfeeding

I know that it's normal for mothers who breastfeed exclusively to not get their monthly cycles. My doctor also told me it's normal to have irregular monthly cycles while breasfeeding. However, I'm beginning to get concerned with the frequency of mine. My baby is 6 1/2 months old and is on baby food, but still breasfeeding 4-6 times a day. I had no period for 3 months after she was born. Then I started getting my cycle every two weeks. It's now at the point where I'm spotting almost every week! Sometimes for just a day or two, then nothing for three to four days before I'm spotting again. Is this normal??? Is there anything I can do to regulate my period and still breastfeed? I've been on the mini-pill for the last 3 months and it doesn't seem to help at all.

I am no DR. but am almost confident you are spotting because you are breast feeding. Everyone is different, but it may stop. I believe your body will regulate itself, just give it more time.

I had the same thought I was the only one! Still breastfeeding 19 month old two three times a day and I have been bleeding every two weeks! Was told it was a hormone imbalance and put on cerelle.was great for four months now I'm back to bleeding every two weeks again!! The joys of motherhood x

Sorry to hear about your increased frequency, I am also in the same boat and was wondering if it had to do with the decreased breast feeding. My little one is 7 months old and eating solids very well, she is still feeding from me 5 times a day. I have been getting a shortened period every 2 weeks for the last month and a half. I was going to call my doctor but I am very hesitant to go on any birth control. thanks for letting me know that there are others out there with the same issue. good luck.

Of course I'm no Dr. but if you are not having pain AND you do not feel like you are bleeding a ton (too much iron loss) I wouldn't sweat it. The fact that you are doing baby food and not just breastfeeding is enough to tell your body to gear up for another baby. Talk to your Dr, about regulating your periods. . . I have never had good luck with introducing hormones to regulate periods but I know it works for many. What a pain, though, right? Every week? Good luck and keep breastfeeding! Your baby is so lucky.
