Is it OK if my baby skips a solid "meal"?

[deleted account] ( 3 moms have responded )

I introduced solids to my son at 6 months, offering once every few days. He wasn't very interested until around closer to 7.5 months. Then I offered once a day.

Now he's 8 months old, and he has two "meals" a day -- around 10am and 5pm. He eats very little (though I suppose it's a decent amount for a baby? I have no clue) and gets most of his nutrition from breastmilk. I still nurse on demand.

Sometimes I have something else going on -- I have to go out somewhere or I don't feel well -- is it OK for him to skip a "meal"? It's a lot of work because I make all of his food from mostly fresh ingredients, and I try to follow baby-led weaning so it's really messy.

I think it's OK nutritionally (though I'm not sure about that either), but I'm wondering if it disrupts his "learning" about mealtimes or whatever?

oh yes my son is 8 months old eats solids at the same schedule. there have been many times where one day he is eating almost nothing but solid food and others none at all. i go by what he wants and if i just have to much going on. i do it all the time it doesnt hurt them one bit . in my opinion any way lol.

It wouldn't be a problem, Liz. Remember, "Food before one, is only for fun." So nutritionally, it's not an issue. As far as the "learning" about mealtimes, I would have the same response - set mealtimes are only a convenience , not something set in concrete.

Ah- I must have missed the part about you being worried about his learning of meal times being disrupted.

We don't have set meal times in our family. We eat when we're hungry, and myself and the girls probably end up having 5-6 meals a day. Which is better for your metabolism than three large ones.

And it's not going to harm his ability to learn to feed himself. That's a basic human behavior.

You've already got ready-made perfect nutrition for on-the-go. :)
