Is my breastfed 21 MO too attached to sleep?

I feel like I've made some big mistakes in my daughter's breastfeeding and sleeping habits. I only nurse her for nap and bedtime to get her to fall asleep (mistake #1?) and now I am having problems with her waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to put herself back to sleep. She doesn't beg to nurse when this happens but she rarely falls back to sleep when I rock her. I usually end up bringing her to bed with me (mistake #2?) after an hour or more of rocking and/or laying with her. We recently took her crib rail off b/c she was able to climb out herself, so I can't even try Ferber method again b/c she will get out of her bedroom (which is upstairs and we are downstairs) and run to get me. Do you think she is just getting overly attached due to nursing this long? Any thoughts or advice?

Oh and studies show meeting your baby's/toddler's needs increases independence overall. Sleeping through the night is not an indication of attachment/independence.
