Does anyone have recommendations for getting your little one to open wide to latch. My son only opens his mouth a little bit to latch and my nipples are cracking. I have tried rubbing my nipples on his lips and his cheeks to get him to open his mouth wide but am still not having any luck. I was hoping that some of you may know some other tricks? Thank you!

Try rubbing your nipple down his nose, then he will look up at you, chin touching your breast. As soon as he opens his mouth bring him very quickly to the breast as the his mouth will only be open wide for a very short time. For the cracked nipples try lansinoh cream, its excellent!

My bab y gets really lazy at his night feeds as he is still tired when he wakes for a feed, I had alot of trouble getting him to latch as he wouldnt open wide enough. A friend told me to try and if i couldnt get him on, use a silocon nipple shield (I bought Avent ones from the pharmacy as u can sterilize in the microwave) - the nipple sheild makes it easier to push your nipple in far enough and prevents cracking and will help them heal in they are cracked. You wont want to use them all the time, I only use them when he wont attach properly (maybe 2 out of 7/8 feeds a day I use them) - Do u have a lactation consultant in your area? or a Breastfeeding helpline u can call for advice, they are awesome and very helpful! Good luck!

The two tricks that you mentioned worked for me with my 10 week old daughter. It took her awhile to get the hang of latching on properly. In the meantime, I'd recommend using lanolin on your nipples to prevent and heal the cracking.

I saw on the tv show The Doctors that if you will tilt the babies head far back that will help them to open wider and as soon as he opens big put him on. Don't let him get use to barely opening b/c once he gets older it will be harder to break. If he doesn't latch on correctly break the suction and try again. Hope this helps you.

Also try the 'flipple' and 'hamburger latch' techniques. Lol.

With the flipple, you push down on baby's lower lip with the bottom of your breast. This gets his lower lip flanged out and his tongue over the bottom gums. Then you sort of roll the rest of your aereola and nipple into the baby's mouth.

With the hamburger latch...tickle baby's nose while squashing your aereola flat like a hamburger- that way, he'll be more apt to get as much of the aereola in his mouth as possible.

The cross-cradle hold is good for control, as is the football hold. Try to get baby's chin touching your breast, with as much of the aereola under the nipple in his mouth as possible.

With a baby who won't open wide, just keep trying again and again- don't wait until baby is really fussy or crying to nurse him. Offer your breast frequently, and he'll take it to nurse for comfort and won't be frustrated while trying to latch.

It sounds like you're on the right track. Try teasing him with your nipple on his lower lip and just wait for him to open wide and have his tongue down. It will happen, but you might have to wait for it. Also, if the latch isn't comfortable, break the latch (you can stick your pinkie in the side of his mouth) and attach him again. It may be a pain, but it will keep you from being in pain and he will learn quickly how to latch properly. Good luck! :)

Oh and make sure he has "fish lips" if his lips are tucked in it will hurt you.
