Long Labor

Samantha - posted on 12/29/2010 ( 17 moms have responded )

Just wanting some more input from people other than my family (who tend to panic). On Sunday, I began having very regular (5 minutes apart) and strong contractions. So I went to the hospital. I was there for three hours, no change in dilation or effacement (been 4 CM dilated and 70&efface since Friday) so they sent me home to labor until the contractions got even closer together or my water broke. It is now Wednesday, my contractions have gotten considerably stronger, but they are now 10-15 minutes apart. When they hit, I can barely stand, can not talk and really have to focus on my breathing. The pressure in my pelvis is crazy! This is my second child, but I was induced for the first. Anyone know how I can help speed this up a bit? I have tried sex, walking, sitting on an exercise ball, and even some acupressure points (which help me to feel WONDERFUL!). Thanks.

Thanks all! My water broke early morning on January 3rd. My beautiful baby girl was here at 1:26 pm that day! It has been a busy two weeks. Thanks again!

good luck, i was like this with 2nd baby, take a rest and a bath ignore your contractions as much as possible. I took a rest for an hour and my labour speeded up.. she was born 2hrs later. X

I would say go. If you can't talk or stand during the contractions, that's a sign that you're getting close. Good luck!

Wow! i hope she decides to hurry up and meet the world! Defiinitely if you feel your body pushing and bearing down on you, go QUICK! I almost didn't make it to my birthing center because of irregular contractions like that. just out of no where my body started pushing and was no where near the center! Luckily made it in time to push the baby out in 12 minutes! good luck, and CONGRATS!!

WOW!! I have no clue how you are still hanging in there! I'd be at that hospital being a complete B***H!!! haha.
All I have to say is, if you feel your body baring down/pushing for you. Get to the hospital ASAP!!! With my 1st my body did all the pushing for me and the doctor had to break my water because her head was about 1/2 ways out and my water still had not broken!
Why are they not doing anything for you? Like breaking your water? My son would have never been born if they didn't break my water. As soon as the dr popped the water bag he was born 30-45mins later! And I was barely 1cm dilated when they broke my water and no real contractions (I was induced which was a joke!).

GOOD LUCK!! But seriously I would go tell your dr you want them to break your water and that you have had enough!

Oh, that's frustrating. My friend had something like what you describe, and when the baby actually came, it was FAST. Hope you are close to the hospital! :) I hope you can get some rest in the middle of all this craziness. Wishing you the best!

i woudl say that if you can not speak or stand then they are strong enough you need to be at the hospital PRONTO. that's what my doc had told me 9 months ago when i had my baby boy.

Still no baby. Ended up going to the hospital last night, but they sent me home again after 2 hours because there has been no change in my dilation (4cm), though my cervix is soft. Contractions are strong, lasting roughly 2 minutes and are about 5-6 minutes apart. When this baby comes, she is going to come fast. Getting frustrated, which is not helping things at all. Thank you so much for your support and I will keep you updated!!

If you have the baby already, congratulations! If not, take some Tylenol and watch a movie or take a nap. I thought my baby was coming Friday night, but the contractions didn't kick into really high gear until Sunday morning, and by Sunday evening the baby was born. I am so grateful to my midwife for making me take some painkillers and spend Saturday in bed. I needed the rest!
