Low Milk Supply?

I am getting ready to go back to work. Yesterday I left my daughter with the nanny to start getting used to being with her. I told her to feed 3 ounces of my pumped milk because that's what I usually get out. She called me and told me that Amelia was still really hungry and ask if she could feed her more. She ate 6 ounces in one feeding. In the meantime I pumped and only got 2 1/2 ounces out. Is my milk supply low?? The nanny suggested adding formula. Dear God I do not want to use formula. What do I do?

Your nanny needs to be more educated on breastfeeding, and breast fed babies - she is used to formula fed babies - so her idea of "hungry" might be off a bit. A breastfed baby usually takes about 20-30 mins on the breast - and at the end of that, they feel full, because it takes 20 mins to feel full - well when being bottle fed, it only takes 10 mins to eat, and at the end, the babies brain has not told the body it's "full" yet. A baby will over eat from a bottle much more than they will from a breast. Let your nanny know this might be the "norm" for a while and that she will need to find other ways of soothing the baby for a little bit after until the "full" signal reaches the baby :) The baby maybe just needed to be burped, or changed - or held and rocked. Do not let her comfort feed. 2-4 oz is plenty and normal for a breastfed baby - for quite a few months actually. The only time this will be different is during a growth spurt - and you can tell that if it's uncontrollable screaming after trying everything to sooth for at least 10-15 mins. THEN, if she still needs to feed more - let her (only an extra 2 oz), it might be a growth spurt, and then you need to add an extra pumping for a couple of days so your supply matches her demand :) Hope this helps.

It doesn't sound like there's a supply problem at all. Pumping is never an indicator of supply but having said that, your output is fine!! Average is anywhere between 1 /2 oz to 1 oz or so..

How old is your baby? 6 oz sounds like a bit much..I wonder if the nanny is overfeeding her..
