My SIL is breastfeeding her 2nd child and is struggling through mastitis for the second time in just 5 weeks! She had mastitis 4 times in the 7 months she breastfed her 1st child. She gets so bad that she can barely even take care of her newborn and is stuck in bed. Any ideas on what may be causing such problems?
I have never even had a clogged duct so I just dont know how to help her. I know that she wants keep going but she can't deal with being so ill all the time. Any suggestions?

I had mastitis twice with my first baby, I had way too much milk. My second bub is 5 mths and no troubles. I usually just nurse one breast per feed unless he is asking for more. This helps slow down the oversupply. One side nearly always is enough for him. Some mums completely express all milk until they are empty and it seems to help. I have tried it before and ended up with too much. With mastitis it is important to keep feeding even though it is painful and massage lumps in the shower.
