Mastitis: how do you cope with getting sick all the time. Please help

I have a 10 week old who is fully breastfed. I'm currently fighting my third bout of mastitis. My question is how many times can you get sick before throwing in the towel?

I bf'd my oldest for 13 months with no problems. Now I'm not even 3 months in and I'm afraid I might have to stop for my health. My partner, who is very supportive of breast feeding, is saying I should stop. I don't know what to do. I'm not able to look after the rest of my family and my house properly when every 2 weeks I'm struck down with illness. I'm taking antibiotics but my body is becoming resistant to them. When I was sick 3 weeks ago I had to have a nurse come to the house every day and give me my meds intravenously.

Please share your success stories with me. I feel like my body is failing me.

i had mastitis 5 times last time. maybe you need to see a lactation consultant to figure out why you keep getting mastitis. i know i kept getting it because i was exausted and my son was a fussy feeder. also, make sure you complete a full 2 weeks of antibiotics and that the dr is giving you the correct ones. if the dr doesnt give you 2 weeks worth of antibiotics, it will not fully clear up.

do you have excess milk? that is another reason i kept getting it. i can only feed one side per feed. it is important to make sure you empty one side before going to the other one, even if you have to express a bit so your breast is completely soft. massage while your are in the shower will help too. also, no underwire bra or holding your breast while bub feeds. this can block milk ducts.

i am sure you know most of that, just offering any suggestions that helped me.

good luck!
