Hi,

My baby born on Jan 2013, 2 months hve gone, still he didnt drink breast milk. initially he was given formula feeding in the hospital for two days. so the problem came. now he completely hesitates to drink breast milk. . he cries a lot while giving breast milk. Moreover, wen i used pump, enough breast milk is not coming. Now i got afraid that whether breast milk will stop. I suggest doctor also, they said "try and try again, he ll drink" like that doctor told. But he s not ready to drink. Two days I ve stopped formula also, even then he s crying a lot but not ready to drink breast milk. He closed his mouth completely while giving breast milk and pushing me with his hand.

What to do for that and wat to do for getting excess breast milk and is there any drawback that he s not drinking breast milk with his energy and strength. Please help me.

I lose my faith that he ll drink breast milk. Please help me

have you been to a la leche league meeting? sometimes just being around other moms who've been in your situation will be helpful. but my recommendation would be to breastfeed before baby is hungry (or he'll be frustrated). also consider what Tami said with some stroger foods may change the food.

Thanks Michelle your post was very helpful..

i tried with eating many fruits and veggies.. this made my son drink breast milk..

still the frequency is 2 - 3 times per day

i think this will increase..

it could be something you are eating. consider taking out foods like garlic, strong spices, caffeine even chocolate. what you eat can change the taste of your milk.

I know it is a little late but find a GOOD IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) that does home visits and will come to your home and see what the problem is. Are you pumping 8-12 times a day to keep up your supply?

What do you mean by, 'I can't see him'? In your first question on the top of the page.

I think the formula milk given has made breastfeeding difficult. Babies are fine to wait for your milk to come in and do not need formula, colostrum is enougth. But it doesnt mean you should stop trying if thats not what you want. Keep offering only breastmilk, while closely monitering wet nappies and wieght gain.:)In the end whatevers best for baby is also best for you. Dont feel pressure from anyone, how you feed your baby is your choice:)

What is your goal? Breastfeeding or bottle feeding or both?

It sounds like you have several issues going on.

Why were you offering him water?

Best thing is to talk to the doctor to make sure there isn't any physical reasons for his not wanting milk. Work with a lactation consultant.

Spend two - three days offering nothing but breast. No water, no formula, nothing but breast. Keep a determined mindset that if he cries and is hungry he gets breast. Make sure he is getting several wet and dirty diapers. If he is wetting and pooping than he is in-taking and is eating.

It could be something you are eating is making your breastmilk taste bad to your little one, that or that your breastmilk doesn't agree with his little tummy. My son couldn't have breast milk I had to use a soy formula with him as he couldn't have my breast.

How old is your LO?

Just keep at it! The first couple of weeks can be so difficult!

My recommendation is to keep putting your little one to your breast and avoid formula entirely even if he spits out the breast milk. He will quickly grow accustomed to it. Just keep hanging in there! It does get better!

Is it the milk itself or the breast?

Have you tried expressing breast milk and feeding in a bottle?

Does he maybe not get a good latch?
