My daughter is 3 months old breastfeeding exclusively, why has my period returned?

I've had cramps yesterday and I started taking the mini pill a week ago but it gave me such severe headaches and cramps that I stopped. Then I woke up this morning with a period.

Always take a test if you're not sure! And yes I think thats common... mine came again after 32 days, when my norm was 24-27.

Now my expected period is 3 days late. Is it common to be off the first few months or should I take a test?

Ah. Well it did come, but like you, it's about every 30 days instead of closer to 25 like it used to. Damn I hate being one of the few that gets AF while exclusively breastfeeding! Ugh..

Mine came back at just under 11 weeks. And that was after 8+ weeks of postpardum bleeding!

I was hoping it was a fluke but I just got it again one month later. Looks like it's here to stay. AF that bitch!

Yes, you are able to get pregnant Stephanie. No one knows if you WILL get pregnant or not, but it is certainly possible. Some women don't get pregnant again until they fully wean their baby, other women can get pregnant within a few months of giving birth even though they breastfeed. Breastfeeding does decrease your chances of becoming pregnant, but it's not enough of a lowered chance to count on as contraception if you don't want another baby right now.

If you are getting a period while nursing, does that mean you'll be able to get pregnant? It's been 6 months of regular periods, will I get pregnant while breastfeeding?

Everyone is different, and it could just be your period being ready to start back. But it could also be bleeding from taking the pill for a week. The mini pill has progesterone in it. Progesterone is also used to start a period in women who aren't having a period. I don't know the doses compared to the dose in BC pills, but it's generally given for 10 days and then a period starts. Just ride it out, and you may not have another one next month.

Hi Terri,

My daughter is also 3 months old and I started my period this week. I am supplementing just like my sister did. Yet, she didn't have a period for almost a year. My sister assures me I can reset it (I.e. make the period go away) by pumping and breast feeding more. I'm not sure how true that is but at least I don't feel so bad anymore. I was almost in tears when I saw my period. I guess every mom's body is different. Most important thing is that the baby is doing ok

Boo AF! I got my first AF with my first daughter about 2 months and then my twin boys, at 8 months. Sucks for sure.
