I had to be hospitalized in May for a couple of days due to DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis or blood clots in my legs).... While I was in the hospital, I was not able to nurse my daughter (and I could barely produce enough milk to pump during those days) and she is going to end up being my only biological child. I really want to try to nurse her again because I was looking forward to it, but my supply is really decreased. I have been trying to take Fenugreek herbs to increase supply, but it is not enough.... I am not ready to call it quits when trying to breastfeed her, but I don't know what to try.... HELP!!!!!

The best thing to do is to nurse more frequently. The key to milk supply is to remove milk often (whether it be nursing or pumping). Does she take the breast at all? I am guessing that she was on formula while you were in the hospital? If she's been getting formula bottles, I would slowly decrease the formula while increasing nursing.. The best way to judge supply is by diaper count-if she is getting plenty of diapers (depending on age) then your supply is good (once you're solely nursing that is)

Here is how to decrease formula supplements:

Good luck!

If she takes the breast, that is great!! What you pump and/or hand express does not equal how much you're making. I wouldn't give up hope, it can be done!

She does take to the breast, but she complains after a few minutes because she is not getting enough for her tastes.... She was on formula the whole time I was in the hospital because I really didn't want her up on the ICU wing (sickness is horrible for newborns- especially some of the ones "floating" around that floor). I just fear that after trying to pump/ hand express and seeing how much is coming out, I will not be able to breastfeed anymore. I was planning on feeding her until she was 9 months to a year old and then weaning her off and now I am afraid she will have to be a "formula" baby. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it just makes me sad to think that the first (and turns out to be the ONLY) time I will be able to breastfeed, something stopped me from being able to do it.....
