Need Advice

My baby is seven weeks old and he is gaining weight like crazy but recently he has started to not eat as long as her used to. I have been told by my lactation consultant that I have a hyper letdown or something like that. He used to eat about ten min on each breast, now he only eats about ten min if that. Is this normal? He has enough wet diapers but he has only been having a poopy diaper about only every other day. The other problem I am having is at night I can't seem to get him to really eat. He will wake up every three hours or so and be hungry but he will only eat for a few min. I'm just worried that he isn't eating enough. Please help!

as babies get bigger and stronger, they get more efficient too. so this means eating quicker. my girls started to only eat for about 10 minutes total at about 2 mos old. it's nice now, especially since i am feeding twins, that it's so quick! if he is gaining and has plenty of wet diapers, i wouldn't worry. as for the poop, it's not unusual for healthy breastfed babies to go days without a BM. breast milk is so pure, there is not much waste. my girls used to only go once every 5-7 days. more now that they are on solid foods, but not that often when they were exclusively on breast milk! good luck.

My daughter eats insanely fast too (Some days my daughter can drain a side in less than 10 min). As long as the diapers are wet and he is gaining weight you should be just fine.

Hi Danielle, as your baby is gaining weight and having plenty of wet nappies and pooey nappies (anything up to a week - 10 days between poos is fine) I'd say there's nothing wrong with your supply, and he's eating plenty.

he seems to have the feeding business down to a fine art and is very efficient and doesn't waste any time!

As the other ladies have said and also he could have mastered BF, so he is quicker, takes some experience. My son went from nursing 30 mins to 5 or 10, now that he is on solids 5 or less...

My son did the same thing until I switched him to formula at 11 months. I was worried, so I asked his pediatrician and she said he probably learned how it get the milk out quicker not to be worried as long as his weight gain is good.

I have a hyper let down to...he can down both breasts in 10-20min depends on how tired he is...and the whole tickle his feet/cheek back does work to keep him up. I also have the horrible nights where I am fighting to keep him awake to fill himself up. I have found that nursing on one side than burping and diaper change (even if dry I open up and use a wipe I know it will make him go by the end of feeding) wakes him just enough to eat on the other side.
As for the poop thing breastfed babies can go much longer between bowel movemets...I had a lactation consultant and my pediatrician say they have seen them go anywhere from every day to almost 8 days with nothing. So dont worry about the bowel movement (or lack of) unless he is also NOT peeing or that next BM you see is really thick. (P.S. i forgot to mention my son is also 7 wks but my second BF baby )

as long as he is gaining weight properly you shouldn't have to worry about it. you can always call your dr and have his weight plotted or go to a bf class as talk with the lactation person there.
