Plugged Milk Ducts

My son is 9 months old and still breastfeeding. He breastfeeds in the morning and before bed and usually when I get home from work (though sometimes he is too into what is going on around him to really nurse). I feel my milk supply has gone down - I don't get really full at work (I still pump once a day at lunch) and I don't really feel any milk in my breasts until my son latches on and my milk lets down. Now, twice in the past two months ,I have had plugged milk ducts in my right breast (the same ducts were plugged). I was able to get the milk to let down after much nursing, pumping, hot/moist heat, and massaging/self milking. Will I always have trouble with those milk ducts (even with my next baby)? I don't want to quit nursing - I am really going to have a hard time giving up that special time with my son. However, I can't help but wonder if my son's declined feeding (he does feed for less time when he feeds) will continue to lead to plugged milk ducts. Any suggestions or thoughts?

I have mastitis in the one breast as well, I find it acts up when I have been sick often and am run down from lack of sleep from sickness or fatigue. I nurse often so it is not from that.

Did you drop nursing sessions suddenly? You want your supply to decrease slowly as your sons interest decreases. When he nurses make sure you still switch positions so that he thoroughly empties all the ducts. Really focus on the trouble area. If you start to feel a lump then point his nose at the clog, use heat and massage while nursing right away to clear it up before it becomes a problem.

Hi! I have the same problem, and have consistently since my daughter was born. I contacted a lactation consultant who recommended I start lecithin supplements, 1200 mg per day. They have helped tremendously and I've only had one plugged duct since I started them (it was on day one, though, so I think the lecithin hadn't kicked in yet). I also increased my water intake to ensure I was staying hydrated enough. I hope this helps, good luck!!
