Possible period while breastfeeding?

My son is 11 months old and at the beginning of August I had what I thought was a period. I bled on and off for 4 days-at times going many hours if not almost all day without bleeding. TMI: some of it was kinda brown looking.

Fast forward and I had temps going up and down, including a temp dip at 34 days after that bleeding started, followed by many days of higher temps. I assumed that my cycle had returned. But now I am 16 days past my alleged ovulation and no period has returned. I took a HPT on Saturday and it was negative. Is it possible to have "break through bleeding" so long after childbirth?

Generally when your period returns, it still takes a while to get back to being regular. It could be a few months before you're regular again, or it could be another year. While you're breastfeeding your hormones are doing things differently than when you're not.

Hmm, now you're asking more details than I know. :) I've found this website useful, and maybe you will too. The page it's linked to is talking about getting pregnant again, but basically it goes into more details about your cycle after pregnancy, and during breastfeeding.

I guess I should add that this was my 4th child. So I know that periods are irregular, but I have never gone this long w/o a period before and when they did come back the longest was 42 days I believe. I don't expect to be regular, but I do know that my longest luteal phase was 15 days and this is day 16...that part of the cycle should stay the same shouldn't it?
