Rough couple days with an 8 month old

For the past couple days its been SO difficult nursing my 8 month old. It seems like every feeding begins with latch, handful of sucks, pull off, fuss and shout, repeat for about 5-10 minutes. Its so incredibly frustrating since we've had zero problems nursing until now. What the heck could be going on? He does eventually end up nursing for a full session, but I just don't understand the beginning fuss! It seems like he's frustrated that there's not immediate let down! lol He usually nurses 5 times a day and the only one that he's not making a fuss during is his first of the day feed. Could it be time to cut out a feed? I can't imagine only nursing him 4 times a day! Help! Any ideas?

I have an 8 month old who has been doing the same thing but he is bottle feed - so obviously nothing to do with let down :) I worked out it was a teething issue and rubbed his gums with bonjela 5 minutes before a feed = problem solved :) I don't know if this will help you but thought I would share just incase.

You could be letting down slower do to any To Do list you've got running through your head as the day progresses. Try to stay very relaxed and just reset him. He may also have a tooth coming that you can't feel or see yet. His gums may be tender and his usual latch just isn't comfy for him.

I does not sound like he wants to drop a feed, just for things to go differently. You will know when a child of his age or more wants to drop a feed.

Teething will definitely cause that. The pressure on the gums from sucking can really bother them, so some baby ora-gel before feeding should help.

my let down can take upto a minute or so, if my 7.5 month old doesnt stay on to suck.
she sucks 2-3 times and pulls off.
soemtimes to look at me and smiles and seems mostly happy.
sometimes she whinges, and I just try to talk to her, and get her latched again, 2-3 sucks, off again.
she's right once the letdown happens, but is quite frustrated until it comes down.
I try to have a drink of water before going to feed her.
I haven't tried drinking while feeding, Im too lazy.
I have heard that helps.
she's just had her bottom teeth come through, but she's been doing this for what seems like months anyway..

we feed a different number of feeds each day it seems.
we dont have too much of a routine worked out.
it's really just on demand.

I just try to take some deep breathes too.

Bonjela is a teething gel - but I am in Australia so maybe it's not available where you are. I used it when I had a tooth ache (I am pregnant and didn't have many options) and it tastes really strong at first and starts tingling so that's probably why he is screaming at first. Good luck - I hope that is all it is :)

Thanks ladies! I didn't even think of a tooth since we just had one come in last week. I don't feel or see anything, but I know that doesn't mean anything. lol

Lisa-Marie, what is bonjela? I'm assuming its a teething gel? Might be a good idea I'll try tomorrow. I've tried using one in the past and Miles screams like you're killing him when it touches his gums. lol It must have a little burn at first.

Kristin, How will I know he wants to drop a feed? This being my first baby, I have NO idea. At this point, he's fed first thing in the AM, before AM nap, before PM nap, before dinner and at bedtime. Even if he's not ready to drop one right now, I figure that eventually it will be the one before dinner that goes. Guess we'll see (;

Well I don't think that its taking any longer than normal.. well actually it probably is because of how the nursing session starts. Regularly I let down within a few minutes, but since he's been so odd, its taking a little bit longer. I don't know. Trying not to get frustrated, but phew its tough!

Is your let down taking a while to happen for some reason? I was unwell for 24 hours and my baby fed like that. I had to pump to activate the let down then allow her to nurse.... We just dropped a feed to 3 a day as well
