my son is 5 months old, and is a pretty big kid. He weighs a little over 17 lbs and is wearing 9-12 month clothes. He used to nurse from both breasts about every 2-3 hours, but lately, he just wants to empty 1 at a time. He fusses if I try to give him the other one. Has anyone had this happen, or is this normal?

My man is 9 months and 20 pounds. He eats from one side until he is done then about 2 hours or so later the other. I eat the same way little meals through the day so why shouldn't he.

Your supply is completely supply and demand. If he doesn't need so much, your body won't make so much. My kids only nurse for 5-10 minutes on one side at each feeding. They're little petite things (my 13 month old is finally starting to wear 9-12 month stuff (she's 18 lbs now), and my oldest wore 3-6 month stuff until she was a year old), but they're all still growing and following growth curves and developing perfectly normal.

It's possible that he recently finished a growth spurt and just doesn't need more right now. Just keep nursing on demand and when he needs more, he'll nurse more, and your body will make more. :)

I believe that it is perfectly normal. My one month old only eats from one side at each feeding and my sister, who has an 8 month old, only feeds her one side at a time too.
