My son is going on 7 1/2 months old. My husband and I want to get pregnant again but I haven't gotten my period yet.. I have been exclusively breastfeeding my son this entire time (im soo proud because i was only going for 3 months & im going on 8 now) I have heard that because i am breastfeeding that its a form of birth control and that i wont be able to get pregnant until i stop breastfeeding so that i can get my period... The thing is that i don't want to ween my son until he is 1, but i also want to get pregnant before he is 1.. Any truth to what i have heard, has anyone gotten pregnant while still breastfeeding??? Do i have to see my doctor??? Any suggestions??????? Has anyone gone through something similar or heard of anything????

I too wanted to get pregnant soon after I had my daughter and was in your exact situation. My daughter is now 19 months and I am still breastfeeding her. I actually just started my period for the first time in over two years yesterday. We have never had protected sex since I my daughter and no pregnancies. When I went to my doctor he just said I would have to wean Fallon if I wanted to start my period and I would have to start my period if I wanted to get pregnant again. Everyone is different. Maybe our bodies know better than we do. That was my final analysis of my situation. Good luck though and I'm still trying myself.

It's not true that you can't get pregnant- lot's of women do, even if they haven't started menstruating yet. Everybody is different and the frequency of nursing makes a difference too. My son is almost 10 months old and nurses 4 times a day, and I haven't gotten a period yet either. We too are hoping to get pregnant, but decided that I'll keep nursing as much as he wants until he's 12 months. At that point we'll reevaluate and maybe try reducing the number of feedings each day to get my hormones going again. In the meantime, we're still hoping that I'll get pregant, in which case I'll probably continue nursing during pregnancy.

Why don't you try an ovulation tester? Some people ovulate while breastfeeding even though they don't get a monthly period.

I've heard its not a good idea to breastfeed and be pregnant at the same time. Think about it, all the nutrients that your body has will go to the fetus and not to your baby. My daughter was 8 mos old before I got my period and I was exclusively breastfeeding. Just give it some time. Let your baby be a baby. From my own experience, its so hard just with one baby, and its even tougher with two! Good luck to you!

I'm in the same boat right now. My son just turned 8 months and we found out that my husbad is getting deployed soon. We don't want to wait until he gets back (my son will be almost 2) to get pregnant again because we don't want that big of an age gap. I haven't gotten my period yet and am wondering the same thing as you. Good luck!

Quoting Tiff:

I have nursed three kids and have never not had a period. lucky you! I heard that believing you cant get pregnant while you are nursing whether you get your period or not is a myth. Now im wondering if I'm normal because my baby is 7 and a half months old, but i've gotten my period every month like clock work!

Tiff,

Sorry to hear, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one.  I get mine every month like clockwork as well and I also have gotten pregnant in the past while breastfeeding.  My OB says that it's not uncommon and that she guesses I'm just that fertile, which is scary but funny!

My period still hadn't returned when I my daughter was 20 months old... so finally I night weened her and got my period 3 weeks later. I nursed her at 7 pm, her bed time and then at 5:30 and 7:30 the next morning ( so I could get some sleep - after struggling to get her down without nursing the 3-4 times she got up because she wanted the comfort that Mommy Milk brings...) I was still probably nursing her 2-3 times during the day throughout this process. Once you get your period you can return to whatever schedule you want...

I am still nursing my daughter at 28 months old, though we are slowly finishing the weening process. I am going to miss it when we are done.

I got my period back when my first child was 3 months old and got pregnant when he was 5 months old. I got my period when my second child was 6 weeks old, I got my period when my third child was 8 weeks old, my period again 2 weeks after the loss of my 13 week twins, got pregnant again 2 months later and got my period 3 weeks after loosing the baby to an ectopic pregnancy. I got pregnant again last June and my son is now almost 4 months old and I've already had 3 periods. During all these times I was breastfeeding exclusively until 6 months and breastfeeding with food supplement until around a year old. Call it fortunate or unfortunate, but I get menstrual cycles no matter what. It is possible to ovulate when you're breastfeeding but not getting menstrual cycles, talk to your doctor and maybe pick up an ovulation kit. Best of luck.

My daughter was eight months old when I got pregnant with my son. I think I had one period and then was pregnant the following month. My son is now nine months old and I still haven't gotten my period back but he breastfeeds a lot more frequently than my daughter did at this age and the frequency of feedings does affect your cycle. EBF can be used as a form of birth control for that reason. You will more than likely see your period come back when he starts to cut down on feedings but every woman is different so it may not come back until you wean completely. Just keep trying because you could be ovulating even though you haven't started menstruating. And good luck!! I so want a third but we're waiting until our son is at least a year before we start trying. I definately have baby fever though :)

I got period back when my three breastfed babies were 8 months old and fell pregnant the following month. I hope this is the case for you.
