Hey all I decided to start weaning my 10mth old very shortly as I am due in May 2011 , I was wondering how long did you take to wean your baby/toddler from breastfeeding onto formula and want tips and tricks worked for you, I also cosleep with her so I also have to get her ok with not having the boob in the night if I am not here. Any advice would be helpful thanks

Ya I proberly wont completly wean her but I do want to make sure she is weaned enough to be comfortable without it,my husband is awesome at going to to bed without even a bottle like today she when down just fine ,so I think we should be ok I bought formula to keep on hand I dont feel that bad cause it will only be a mth on it and even that she will still get the boob than when she is 12-12.5mths I will wean her to either goats or homo milk.

what an amazing opportunity, to be able to do that for someone else's baby! i still think she will be okay. i don't think you need to wean her completely, but i understand that you are worried about medical issues.

I would love to wait till she was 1yr or older I would tantum nurse but we already know due to med reasons we will have to stay in the nursary for alittle bit and I dont know how its going to play out so I need to get my 10mth old to be "ok if I dont get the boob" I know I wont dry up because I have been a "wet nurse" for 6yrs after my last babes but I dont wait my 10mth to left in the dark if I get be here to nurse her.

If you just wait 2 more months, you won't have to use formula. She can have Cow's milk or you may have better luck with Goat's milk (similar to human breast milk). Also, I really don't think you should actively try to wean. Sometimes babies and toddlers wean because your milk supply tends to drop between the 4th and 6th month. Why not wait and see what she does?

I went away for the weekend, and she didn't ask for the book with my husband. When I came back most my milk was gone and I just distracted her when she asked. She stopped asking for it. She was a bit older, but she went straight to the sippy cup:)
