I googled it and copied some text "Do not give your baby cow's milk for the first 12 months. Babies have trouble digesting (breaking down) regular cow's milk. Formula is made to be easier for babies to digest, and has the right amounts of vitamins and minerals that babies need. Cow's milk has large amounts of certain vitamins and minerals which a baby's kidneys cannot handle. There is also not enough vitamin C in cow's milk to keep your baby's gums and teeth healthy. Cow's milk may also cause your baby to have certain allergies or other problems."

There are loads more sites with professional advice and opinions with more detailed information, but that is the gist of it :)

If you really have to wean, go to formula. Even though babies younger than a year can have whole milk products, drinking milk does not have all the nutrients breast milk/formula has. He should be eating 3 meals a day, but his main source should still be from breast milk/formula.

Formula.

Cow's milk before one year can cause a loss of iron, putting your baby at risk for anemia.

Typically cow's milk is hard for babies to digest and that is why formula or breastmilk is best. That and there are a lot of hormones in cow's milk. Can you pump and freeze and go half breastmilk and half formula? There are a lot of health benefits with breast milk.

I have read and was told by my pediatrician that giving whole milk too early can actually damage the intestinal lining. Talk to your doc, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Cows milk does not provide the necessary nutrition for a child that young. If you have to wean at this age you should use formula.

It is not likely that anything dramatic happens if you use cows milk instead, but it is not recommended to use cows milk before 12 months.
