When did your period come back?

My son is going to be a year old in about a week and my period still has not returned. He has been the type to nurse frequently until maybe a couple months ago when he started getting really distracted/more interested in playing. It was probably only about a month ago that he started sleeping longer periods at night and we are now down to nursing before bed around 7pm or 8pm, then when he wakes up around 4am or 5am we nurse and we both go back to sleep, then we nurse again when he wakes up for the day around 6am or 7am. I've heard that your period typically comes back when your baby stops needing so many night feedings- do you find that to be true? Before he went to the night schedule I listed above he was nursing frequently (every 3 hours or so) during the night because most nights we were co-sleeping. My husband and I are thinking that we'd like to try for our second baby, but with no period it seems like actively trying would be pointless.

For me, I got mine back after about 14 months. With my oldest, she was still nursing at least once during the night at 14 months. She started sleeping through the night around 17 months. I got pregnant with number 2 when she was 21 months old. I'd had no urge to start "trying" for number two until I'd gotten almost a months worth of full nights sleep. However, we didn't use any form of protection either.

With my 2nd daughter, we knew we didn't want any more, so I opted for an IUD. I had bleeding on and off that I associated with the IUD, but didn't start getting periods again until she was 14 months old.

The amount of time it takes for your period to return is very variable. Some women get it back as soon as 6 weeks post partum, some not until 2 years post partum.

Kelly Mom has a great article on the return of fertility.
