Hi everyone, I'm new to circle of moms. I am not quite sure if I am posting under the right community but I am a breastfeeding mom. Since saturday, my wisdom tooth has been hurting and I just realised that it is growing out of my gums. I am just wondering if any of you know any safe pain relief for this? Also, is wisdom tooth extraction safe to do when I'm breastfeeding? Thanks all!

generally Tylenol and ibuprofen are considered safe when breastfeeding. Obviously you need to take your own health history into account (if you've had problems with one of these before don't take them now either).

Any medication you are concerned about you can look up on LactMed

http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/ht...

Type in the name of the medication, and it will tell you what's known about the medication and impact on both infant and milk supply. Many many medications are OK to take while breastfeeding. Obviously you want to make sure your Dr knows that you're breastfeeding before he/she prescribes pain med.

And I would think in general a tooth extraction could be done. Local anesthetic like Novocain shouldn't be a problem at all. And even if you're being put under general anesthetic, by the time you wake up from the procedure, enough of the drug is out of your system that you can breastfeed again. But again.... ask your dr specifically which medication will be used, and either ask your Dr to look it up, or you look it up and make the call for yourself if it's OK for you to take.

Thanks a lot! I have called the dentist and will be having a check up next week. Hope it goes well. Thank you so much for all the info. Will definitely save the website you gave for future use. :)
