Moms Church Group

Gina - posted on 01/21/2011 ( 4 moms have responded )

A few mothers and I have been trying to start a moms group at our church. We came up with a list of ideas, such as a bible study, prayer group, play group, etc. I was wondering if anyone is involved in a church moms group and what your group does?

I'm not but i wonder if your group could help support a local pragnancy crisis center..maybe once every few months donate your outgrowns for a mom in need? Your group can have a charity componet or even it would be nice to have a group for moms to set goals and offer support in rasing more fatih centered families. How about a book club with spiritually based books. Or even a small bake sale or just baking for the local free meal program at your church. Ideas for thought. I hope this all works for you. Good luck

Hi !
4 years ago I started a moms group in our church with 5 other women. Our format is very informal but we open in prayer and then visit a little. When our group was small, one mom would bring a treat to share and the church would provide the drinks and paper products. Another mom would present a topic of discussion or do a 5-10 minute teaching about our Faith (we happen to be Catholic). Our babies and toddlers are with us or playing in the adjoining playroom.
In the 4 years since starting this group, we have grown to 30 women. We have had to make some adjustments...we now have our moms split into 3 teams and each team takes a turn "hosting". This involves setting up the snack table and providing the snacks, picking a conversation topic and leading it and then clean up.
Our group meets the first and third Thursday of the month in our church dining room from 9am-11am. In the summer we meet weekly at a park.
My advice to you is to seek out a handleful of other moms that are wanting to meet and then start meeting. The Holy Spirit will guide you and your group will figure out what it want s to do.

We don't have a moms group at my church right now. But we do have an adult book discussion group. I like that because I get some adult interaction and I get to discuss things that aren't sesame street and spongebob for an hour a week. I would think you could combine that with a play group of some sort where you are discussing a book, having some coffee, while the little ones are playing.

Thanks Sabrina for all the great ideas. Next time I see the other moms I will definitely mention them.
