Advice wanted for anaphylactic child starting school.

Sonya - posted on 11/12/2011 ( 1 mom has responded )

Hi, My boy is severely allergic to peanuts, treenuts, wheat, eggs, dairy, soy, fish and shellfish.
He is starting school next year and I would love your tips and advice. I will be sitting down with the staff for refresher training of the Epipen and a risk assessment.
I will have Cohen with me so they all know him.
What does your school do to support anaphylactic children?

My son, Jareth, is anaphylactic to peanuts, dairy, eggs, tree nuts. I send him to school with a medicine pack in his backpack. In it is his EpiPen, Benadryl and his rescue inhaler. He is old enough to open his own Benadryl, so when he finds getting really itchy, hives, or the whites in his eyes start to swell, etc., he talks to his teacher. She'll then give him permission to open a pill.

The school nurse, the teacher and I had a meeting to discuss syptoms, use of his different meds.

The front desk also has an EpiPen.

Jareths school provides breakfast. I met with the head of the cafeteria. She took me into the back and showed me all the foods they feed the kids. I went through each of the foods, read the ingredients, and wrote down which foods he could have. (There are a few cereals he can eat.)

I provide cereal bars and individual soy milk boxes for his teacher.

There is a "Peanut and Nut Free Room" sign outside is his classroom door.

When the parents met with the teacher at the beginning of the year, I made the announcement of Jareths allergies, and exactly how severe they are. Now, with class parties, the organizer calls me to find out how to make the party safe. I volunteer whenever I can. Usually I have to bring something for him bc there is something that he can't have.

I hope this helps. If there are any questions you have, I'd be happy to help out. :) Good Luck!
