Just Diagnosed and Nervous, Need Help!

Hello, just recently our baby was diagnosed on the 19 week ultrasound with a unilateral cleft lip and palate. The doctors are unable to tell us how far back the palate goes. We are waiting for the genetics to come back. I was wondering if anyone on here can help us. We would love to talk and chat with all of you about your experience and if any of your kids would be comfortable talking with us we would like to also speak to them to see their point of view as well. Any and all help is appreciated.

Hi Michael. First I would like to say please don't panic! We found out at our 20 week scan that our baby boy has a unilateral cleft lip and possibly a cleft palate also. The first thing my husband and I did was panic and it really felt like someone had stamped on us! After visiting every specialist and surgeon and scan after scan we decided all this research and planning meant nothing until our we had our baby. In June 2014 I delivered a beautiful baby boy with a cleft lip all the way up to the nose and a cleft gum, we were lucky the palate was not affected. The first thing we thought was how amazing this little baby was and that in 3 months it would all be sewn back together. He was amazing, a normal healthy happy smiley baby, we kept thinking how could we have been so down and stressed when this is such a small cosmetic issue and even though he has to have surgery at such a tiny age and he will need orthodontic work this is really in the big scheme of life a minor minor issue! Apart from squeezy bottles with special shaped teets he didn't need anything more than any other baby! He had his surgery at 3 months and you will be so surprised how brave and strong these tiny little people can be, he was amazing and after a week laughing and playing as though nothing had even happened! He is the best thing that has ever happened to us and to think we were so down and worried throughout my pregnancy makes us laugh, I wish I enjoyed my pregnancy more, so please enjoy this pregnancy and wait till your beautiful baby comes out; it's so amazing what surgeons can do these days, you can't even see a scar some days! Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy and be excited that you will be the happiest parents in the world very soon!
