HI Everyone,

I am very excited to find this group of moms. My son just turned one and we are so confused about what to do. He has a microform cleft which means he wsas born with the scar and a slight notch but no actual opening. Anyone have the same situation? I would love to know what others have done.

Thanks

My son has a microform cleft on his left side. I noticed it when he was born and went to see several plastic surgeons about it. No one had any good answers and the opinions were mixed and so I decided to leave it alone until my son was old enough to notice it himself and have it repaired if it bothered him. It never affected his eating or speech, otherwise, if it had, I would have pursued surgery when he was young. He is now 11 and I think has started to notice it a little more. I will wait for him to tell me it adversely impacts his self image and then we can see about finding a surgeon. Hope this helps.

hi, I just wondered how the surgery went. I no it was a while back now but only just found this group. My son is now 4 and has exactly the same but with an extra tooth. I decided not to have any surgery although my partner was all for it. Are you happy with the decision you made and the result now? X

My son was born with a microform cleft also .. He is 14 now and we never did surgery , he doesn't have any issues or trauma so far , he is very smart an a happy teen . If he ever decides he want to have surgery, It will be done. But I will let him decide.

My daughter has the same. She is now 2 1/2 yrs and scheduled for surgery in a few days. I am also stuck on wether to do the surgery. I LOVE her smile, lip, ALL of it! Her scar goes up into her right nostril and the same nostril is crooked bent down. She also has a 'scar' on her gum in the same spot and a missing tooth.

The nose and teeth will not be fixed till much later. She also has Extremely small ear canals, though not sure if that is a seperate situation. We also found out at her last cleft team appt that she may have an issue w/ her soft palate, as air is escaping through her nose when she speaks certain words.

My husband is really pushing for the surgery, but I feel, since their isn't a medical necessity, why! I want my girls to be PROUD of their appearance, the way God made them. And what lesson am I teaching by surgically correcting a minor 'defect' in her lip?!?!

On the other hand, having the surgery will allow a better look at her soft palate and her ear canals, which would be impossible if not under anesthesia!

I know you posted awhile back, but hopefully you (or another going thru the same) will see this! Thanks! :0)

I think that type of cleft is what joaquin phoenix was born with. At least, that is what I heard.
