thanks that helped alot i was born with a cleft lip and plalate but mine was not as bad as emma's or some of the procedures just weren't there. the muscle sphichter(sp) is the surgery she will be having in april will help close the gap she has from her soft palate to where her adnoids are growing back and leaving an opening so she can't seal it up when she is talking. she is missing some of her hard palate on the left side that is why she needs the bone graft they did tell me they are taking it out of her hip. thank you so much for the advice. and we have a great support team.

Is Emma missing her soft palate or hard palate. By what you are saying, it seems she's missing some of her soft palate and hard palate. My son wasn't as bad as Emma's. My son was missing a tear drop shape on his soft palate so they reconstructed that when he was 9 months old. The doctors said they could do the cleft lip first which they did at 3 months old and they had to wait till he got older to do the soft palate because he need more palate to close the opening. The soft palate is in the back of the mouth on top. When you talk, your tongue hits the roof of your mouth so if any of that is missing, it causes speech problems. Your tongue also hits the hard palate, were the teeth are too. They are probably doing a bone graft because she's missing her hard palate too. In order for her to get teeth, she needs a hard palate. The doctors waited to see if his hard palate would grow and when he was seven they said he had his hard palate so they didn't need to do any bone grafts. Are they taking the bone out of her hip? My son didn't start talking until he was 3 years old so he had a delay in speach. He had to go to speech therapy. My son has to wear glasses because of the cleft and he's had plastic surgery on his one side of his nose where the cleft was to puff the nose up some. The cleft and palate deformaty, will sometimes cause problems to the face, hearing, eye's and speech so just be on the look out for all this too. No one told me about that so when my son's eyes started to cross, I thought he would just out grow that but he didn't. He has been wearing glasses since he was 9 months old and he's now 12 years old. Everything will be fine and you will have years of going to the doctors but they know what they are doing. Have a stong support group to lean on. We didn't because my husband is in the military and we didn't have any family. Support will get you through this but Emma is in good hands. Emma is a very pretty little girl. My son is doing great and you can hardly see his scar. I hope this helps.
