How will you celebrate easter? Not holiday plans, but traditions and rituals in the home?

I just reread your question. It must be my advanced age I'll be 54 in May  that caused me to not read it right the first time. any way--- My husband and I will need to be at the Church  by 6 a.m. because we are helping with the Easter Sunday Breakfast before our morning service. We have also spent time this week reminding our self's  about what Jesus did for us. We will attend Good Friday Service and on Saturday our church has an Easter Egg Hunt that we encourage our families to invite children and their parents that are unchurched. Along with the fun they will hear The Real Reason For This Season. When we get up on Sunday instead of saying good morning or Happy Easter, who ever is awake first will tell the other He IS RISEN the response will be HE IS RISEN INDEAD.

This year will be very different for my husband and I. Both of our daughters will again be away at school.  The youngest however is in Peru until the end of May so we may not even talk to her. We did get to talk to her yesterday for about  30 minutes using Skype. Being able to see her makes up for not talking to her very often.  Our oldest opted to stay in NC and work. She is graduating in May, and will be paying back LOTS of loans soon so she is being very responsible. My older sister who usually comes to holiday meals is having a very hard time with her mental health problems and believes we are trying to hurt her so she is not coming to our home for dinner. Although our daughters have been unable to get away from college before it is the first time we have been home that my sister is too ill to want to come to our home.

We just get together with family for the "Sunday tradition" but we do other wonderful things during Passover week. We have a seder with some family and friends...we do a leaven search to remove the symbols of sin both from our home and hopefully also from our hearts. We remember that resurrection day is really the Feast of Firstfruits and God's Son is only the first to be given the life eternal that waits for us. Ask me more if you want other details. It is one of my most favorite times of the year.

We do resurrection eggs - they are so much fun and  a great way to teach the children the story of what happened on Good Friday and Easter Sunday - check out how to homemake them on my blog at

I also posted the recipe on how to make Easter Story Cookies here - check it out!  They are another great tool for teaching kids the story of Jesus' death and resurrection!

Attend church service with family and owrship the risen Lord. Then we come back home and as a family enjoy a traditional meal where we are expressing our gratitude and apprecitation of our family's love but most of all the Love that Jesus had for us. I'm so thankful today that Jesus died for my sins he didn't ahve to do it but he did and I am so grateful I'm saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost!!!

My kids will get eggs but they both know that it is a tradition dating back to when people gave up eating eggs for lent so Easter Sunday was a day for eggs. I boil eggs for breakfast in coloured water so we have red eggs . then church which is difficult or us as my teenage daughter has changed church to one that has more teenagers and is a bit more upbeat( a decision her dad and I are happy with) . My Husband is a trainee cleryman so he goes to his placement parish and my son and i cant go with him as my mom in law likes to go to our regular church and as she doesnt drive i bring her. so it will be lunch time by the time we get to be together as a family to celebrate. after lunch we ususlly go fr a long walk we live in the country so its nature and springtime all around..

Quoting Beckie:

I like to try and make RESURRECTION STORY COOKIES (I have the recipe, it's very long). We usually get new clothes and of course we go to church!!! We don't do all the Easter bunny stuff like most American families since it is pagan. Easter is my favorite holiday since it is the day the Lord proved He and He alone is God's son.

I should have added that we also celebrate passover.  We have a seder dinner at our church. It is taught/ led by a messianic jew from our church. To Jewish people that is the time they celebrate their freedom from slavery but as Christians you view it so differently because you see how Christ is truly the Messiah through the seder dinner in celebrating freedom from slavery and the pharaoh.  Of course this takes place a few days before Easter but for me it is part of the resurrection celebration.

Easter is family time for us.  We go to sunrise service, then to breakfast, then back to the church for regular service.  Night service is cancelled, so we go over to visit with family - grandparents (both side), eat dinner, we read the Resurrection story from the Bible, then we pull out a cross and nail in nails into the cross to represent leaving the sin our life on the cross, then we play games for the rest of day until my hubby and I and the little one have to go home.

Hi Christelle,

Also in SA, Jo'burg to be exact :)

We go to church, we say Resurrection Sunday. We do have chocoate 'easter eggs' for the kiddes, but explain that they're a treat (like sweeties you would have at a birthday party) for celebrating that Jesus is alive! My middle child(daughter 4) has done the easter bunny colouring in etc at school and wants to know when the easter bunny is bringing her eggs, i just try to play that side of it down and make the big deal about Jesus and His rising again.
