Is it okay to listen to other music besides Christian music?

I love Christian music, but also some new and old skool R&B and clean rap, I know people who say that its not good to listen to other music besides christian music, because it's not lifting jesus up, so what if you want to have a romantic dinner or spend time with your hubby,so just listen to christian music?, I would feel guilty or funny while you know....

I still listen to country and bluegrass (my hubby got me onto that lol) But the country I listen to is the old time, and I dont listen to much of the newer stuff. If the lyrics dont pertain to something good, I dont listen, as in like getting drunk or getting revenge as a lot of country now is talking about.Songs I like are more inspirational, things they have been through and felt, and in the end knowing its ok.
I mostly listen to Air 1 or K Love, but even some of the songs on there I am choosy, just because of my preference in music. But all in all I think its ok, as long as it is sending a good message and is up lifting.

You are correct with feeling silly with bringing Jesus into the romance department. Jesus is perfectly happy letting you and hubby have some romance alone. Barry White, Luther Vandross, and R. Kelly and the others are for romance, Yolanda Adams, Mary Mary, BeBe & CeCe and the others are for worship. Everything in moderation, and of course a good bit of Christian sense and we all will be fine.

We'll obviously have different interests, not just because I'm 13, but also because we're not the same person. Yes! I'm Christian and I listen to Green Day and My Chemical romance. Those may not be the best choices for you, but it's worth a shot!
Best of luck, Cece

Music is not bad because God created it. We make the mistake of giving Satan power to turn something good into a foul thing. What is most important is the message, the lifestyle of the artist, and it's intent. Some artists don't curse in their music, but do they live a life holy unto God? We wouldn't listen to a pastor who didn't live what he preached and therefore we must hold the artists of the music we listen to in that same regard. We also fail to realize that just because something is labeled "gospel" or "christian" doesn't make it good. Heck, Elvis made a gospel albumn, and we all know the life he led. Make sure you understand that the heart of an artist is his works; if his heart is unclean, he's just tainting yours.

I listen to some old school R&B but not this stuff that's being played today. I love listening to worship music and that is the only thing I listen to when I am in the car with my children. I don't want my children repeating anything that isn't holy so I don't listen to it. Like I said I listen to stuff from the 80's and 90's and it's only done by myself. If God doesn't convict your heart listen to it but you have to know what's acceptable and unacceptable in your own walk with God.

Enjoy the artistic merit of all types of music. The only kind I personally refuse to listen to is some of the newer rap songs that degrade women and seem to have an over abundence of 4 letter words. And I make a choice to not listen to any artist that creeps me out - Chris Brown and Kayne West come to mind at present. Being in the public eye ( and making millions ) I think does come with the requirement to be role models.

I also don't like a lot of the hard rock. But I've tried to listen to a bit to try and figure out what kids see in it. If I ever, ever figure it out, I'll let you know.

Hoping you found just the right mood music for your date night with your hubby.

I think it is okay as long as it isn't interfering in your walk with God. I think sexually explicit songs should be avoided altogether though.

There are all kinds of genera of Christian music, you can pretty much find a selection for any situation, romantic, up beat, soft rock, rock, rap, r&b, alternative etc...

However I don't think listening to secular music is wrong, it depends on the songs, racy sexual songs or songs that curses or talk about drugs & violence and stuff, I wouldn't listen to, but where as we don't really own any secular music CDs ourselves, we let the kids watch Hannah Montana or Jonas on tv occasionally & at Christmas we put on the radio station that plays only Christmas songs.

These scriptures came to mind, I hope they help.

1Co 6:12 "Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything.

1Co 10:23 "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"—but not everything is constructive.

I feel like this GOD is greater than your heart & if he does not convict u, which is inyour heart than who is man. There is nothing wrong with listening to slow R&B, I am not a fan of rap but that is for me, as a preacher's wife I would not recommend that u constantly listen to that kind of music all the time but remember GOD is the only 1 u have 2 answer 2, wut we need to be focused on is having a relationship with GOD but remember to each own conviction. BE Blessed

I think it depends on the individual song. The lyrics in each song are different, I will not listen to anything about drugs, sex, getting drunk, or anything that is not something that as a Christian I shouldn't be doing. I see no problem with listening to classical music, or romantic music that is about true love, not one night stands or cheating or any of that garbage. I don't listen to R&B, so I can't suggest anything. But I can tell you that there is Christian music in every genera too. There is Christian R&B, Christian rap, Christian rock. Even Christian romance. One of my favorite songs is by Newsong and is about God creating husband and wife for each other.

I personally don't think it's anything wrong with listen to Old school and some R&B music.. I have christian friends that does all the time.. Just be mindful of what your listen too .. I wouldn't listen to it if it's cussing and stuff like that in it.
