My son (16) says that he wants to get circumcised. What do I tell him?

Hello

I am a single mom with one son. He is an only child.

To start from the beginning:

When my son was younger we had to go to the doctor several times because of an undecended testicle. However, it seems to have sorted itself out some time after he entered puberty, at least they are both there now.

However, the doctor also noticed some iregularites with his foreskin, particularly that the frenulum seemed a bit too short, which made retracting the forskin a bit dificult. But at the time we decided to leave it alone, and deal with it if he would start to have any problems.

He's never mentioned anything about it before, so I assumed that everything was ok with it.
But then a few months ago he suddently started to talk about circumcision. He said that he wants to get circumcised. I asked him if it was because he was having problems with the frenulum, but he says that he wants a "full circumcision", so that everything gets removed, including the frenulum. I told him that it might not be a good idea with such a radical approach, since all his mates wouldn't be like that, it might make him feel out of place.

But he is insiting that he wants a circumcision. He's even found a clinic where they'd do it!
But of course he would need my consent first.

So what should I do? I don't want to hold him back if it's really what he wants, but on the other hand, how can I make sure that he's considered all the implications?

The problem is that I don't know much about it. Circumcision is uncommon here in the UK, and generally has a somewhat negative image. I wouldn't want him to get stigmatized because of that.

So any help and information would be so helpful for me. If there are any experts on the subject out there, then please get in touch. You can ask for my email if that is easier for you.

Thanks!

Marie

The fact that he did all the research shows he really wants it. Plus hes old enough to make a smart decision about it. Did you end up taking him?

He's old enough and it's not your penis. It's cleaner and will be beneficial for him and future female partners. Just say yes

Yeah, atleast he isnt afraid to state his opinion. I guess it was more me that was reluctant to ask too direct questions. But I'll opening up the discussion a bit, as you say, maybe he doesnt realize what the different options actually are. Thanks for the help, will get back once I have a chance to talk to him.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, he said it was a clinic that specialized in circumcisions. I'll try to ask him for the name of the place. Maybe I can contact them directly.

As far as I know, he isn't sexually active yet, but I can't be 100% sure.
He seems to masturbate regularly ever since he was about 13.

I suspect the problem is with his frenulum, but I also feel like he isnt telling me the whole story about his reasons. I'll try to press him a bit more about it, and then report back here.
