Need advice! How best to explain to my daughter, her brother's circumcision wound?

Hello,

Our five year old daughter is very excited about being a new big sister and enjoys assisting in as much baby care as possible. We've encouraged this. On our son's fourth day home from the hospital, my daughter was at my side as I bathed him, and she became quite concerned and asked many questions about "the booboo" on her brother's penis, aka, the circumcision site. I don't really feel that I did an adequate job of reassuring her that this was done for a good reason and that her brother will be just fine. I imagine that others on here may have found themselves in a similar situation, having to explain to a young daughter what to make of seeing her brother's newly circumcised penis. Any suggestions as to what I might be able to say, and how to say it, in order to set her worried mind at ease? It's been a few days since she first saw him bathed and she still brings up the topic.

Any advice, I'm all ears.

Thank you!

LilyAnn

just explain to her that instead of deciding to properly educate her brother on basic hygiene you decided to take the easy way out and mutilate his genitals, destroy a sexually responsive part of his anatomy before he ever had the chance to place a value on it for himself.

Explain that your failure of the most basic duty of a parent, protect your child from harm, was a decision that you made because you fully acknowledge your inadequacy as parents.

I think it is important that you stress it is not a serious concern and that her little brother will be clean and healthy. Again though stress it is not a big deal and he is not hurt.

Hi, congrats on your new baby also :).. we have just been through a similar thing with our daughter and new son. Maybe we are just an open family but we explained why his penis was sore and why we circumcised him ( to make cleaner and look like daddy) My daughter seemed happy with that explanation lol.. hope that helps xo
