My daughter started using a straw sippy cup from the age of 3 months...it is great..apparently they say it is best to start them either on a cup or a straw first since the correct muscles are used.

My son is 8 months next week he has 7 teeth and has been using a sippy cup for a couple of months now as he loves water...it is a tommy tippee one with a soft top and he holds it and drinks from it himself, he also has just learnt to drink from a straw from the wee baby juice boxes!

I have just put handles on my daughters bottles as an interim step before giving her actual sippy cups. Once she gets used to holding them then I will give her the sippy. Im in no real rush though because I really enjoy feeding her her bottle and I wont be able to do it for too much longer. If you dont wanna do it dont do it - enjoy having them as a baby rather than rushing them through it :)

every now and then you should teach your baby to drink in a sippy cup... my son used a sippy cup during his 6th month...

I found that my son will only take a sippy cup that has a silicone tip to suck from. He dose not like the hard plastic ones.
Target makes a great one for babies aged 6+ months.
If you don't think hes ready its not a big deal at all.
I chose to start him on a sippy cup so that he could know the difference between getting juice or water and I save formula just for bottles.
He actually loves his cup with ice cubes and cold water to help his teething!

Only you know your son best. You can always try it and if you don't think he's ready just wait a few more weeks. My daughter is breastfed and refuses bottles. However, we tried a sippy cup with a soft spout when she was around 5 months and she loves it. I only give her water but she is excited when she sees it. She's also on solids now and had been since about 7 1/2 months.(She skipped the whole pureed stage.) Part way through her meal I offer a small regular cup with a bit of water and she is now drinking from that. I had to help her in the beginning but now she does it alone. Sometimes she spills but that the fun part of learning! She's almost 8 months now. Oh yeah, and she has just 2 teeth.

My son does not have any teeth and he has used a sippy cup for a few weeks now. FYI- the people at WIC say that your child should not start any cereal or food until 6 months old and my son started at 4. The sippy cups are awesome and you can give them some water and juice- they love it!!! plus it gets them more coordinated... i promise your son is ready if you want him to be!
