Sariah - posted on 11/20/2010 ( 6 moms have responded )

at the 8 week ultrasound and 12 week checkup the babies heartbeat was in the 160s. But at my 16 week checkup the heartbeat was only in the 140s. is this a normal drop in heart rate? We wont get to here it again until our ultrasound on the 6th of december. we have been kind of thinking its twins but the first u/s showed only one baby.

It's extremely normal and when you think about it, it makes very much sense. When you are early on in your pregnancy and the baby is as big as a peanut, it's heartrate is going to be faster... as the baby grows, it's going to slow (unless the baby is highly active when they're listening for the heartrate). Think of a hummingbird.... they are SOOO tiny and their heartrates are so fast that it sounds like a hum... then look at us, our heart rates aren't that fast, especially not as fast as they were when we were a fetus or infant.... As the baby gets bigger it's heart rate is going to slow down.... I'm on my 4th pregnancy (but I lost my first one at 20 weeks... I am 22.5 with my third and have a 7 year old and a 3 year old). This baby's heart rate started at 178 and at my last apt. (a month ago... I have 1 today as well) it was 143. Don't worry. Everything is fine!

Our little boy's Heartbeat was 140 @ 8 weeks and now at 21 weeks it is 155!! My 1st son was always around 140 but it all depends on the time of day and how active they are during certain periods. No need to worry :)

My heartbeats are never the same from appointment to appointment and vary quite a bit.
