acid reflux

I have had laryngitis- no voice at all- for over two months. My doc finally referred me to a specialist who discovered I have acid reflux so bad, it's up to my voice box. I was shocked because I've never gotten heartburn. He prescribed Nexium, and I've been taking it a couple of weeks with no results. Anybody else going through this? I have a 14 mo daughter, and it's frustrating to not be able to talk to her. Any suggestions? I'm also concerned about taking Nexium and whether it's safe for my unborn baby. Any advice would be appreciated.

I had acid reflux (GERD) so bad with my first child, they thought I had pnuemonia and found out it was acid reflux. I just prilosec and it did help. What is happening is that the acid from your stomach is burning from your mouth all the way down to your stomach. It'll heal but you have to keep taking the nexium. Also try milk or anything pickled (the vinegar cools the acid). Try sleeping in a reclined position so it makes it harder for the acid to come up your throat. I had heartburn with the second child and with this one right now but no where near as bad as I had with it my daughter.

My bestie has GERD, which I believe is a form of acid reflux, and she has been on Nexium for as long as I've known her (5+ years). She's been preggo twice in that period with no bad side effects for the baby. (I'm very much of the idea that drs don't prescribe meds that would be detrimental to our babies.)

As for how to communicate with your daughter, have you considered signing (more difficult to teach when you can't talk but possible) and/or pre-recorded snippets (by another adult) for you to play back from your cell phone or a handheld recording device? Just two suggestions.

Hope you're better soon!

Thanks, Connie. It's extremely frustrating. I have actually tried teaching her sign language, using DVDs and books. She's a very social, verbal little girl. I'm relieved to hear that your bestie had no side effects for her babies. I will continue to take the meds and hopefully feel better quickly. :)
