Early Waking, What Causes It and What Can I Do?

My sons "normal" wake time is between 7:00 and 8:00 am and up until a few weeks ago, he never deviated from it. Lately he has been waking up extremely early (5:00am or earlier) ready to start his day. It doesn't happen every day, but enough to concern me.

He doesn't cry when he wakes up. He just does his normal morning routine. He calls for me, then he calls for dad, then he talks to himself and starts calling for me again.

We've tried everything. We've rocked him, left him alone in his crib, brought him into our bed. Nothing works, and we end up having to get up and start our day super-early.

Add this to the fact that he rarely naps (I would say only an afternoon nap twice a week if we're lucky) and I am concerned that he isn't getting enough sleep.

Have you gone through this with your little one? What do you think could be causing this? Do you think I should be concerned? What should I do to remedy this? Any ideas?

I should note that his bedtime has not changed (he goes down between 7:30 and 8:00).

My son has started doing the same thing, sometimes it's because he needs his nappy changing but often we can't work out why. Our boy is in a toddler bed, we put a gate across his door so he can't wander around. He seems quite happy playing in his room for an hour or two and there is nothing dangerous he can get hold of. Maybe try letting him play on his own that way you can still have a rest. I think they need less sleep as they get older and more exercise to tire them out, not easy in the winter when the weather's bad!

Well for me i have my 23 month old who goes to bed around 9:30 pm, and gets up around 8 am everyday..sometimes falls back to sleep and wakes up again around 9 am or even 10 but he's been doing that since day one, ive never had problems with him waking up early ever...and that includes a nap during the afternoon as well....but i should actually mention i stopped putting him down for naps this past week just because he's so busy playing and running around that i don't bother putting him down....for me i find that 7:30-8 is too early to put a child down...i can understand putting them down around 8 pm once they are older and about to start school or kindergarten but for now when they are as young as 2 years old i think putting them to bed a bit later is ok. I also find when i take my son outside for a quick walk even just down the road a block that the fresh air and long walk(for him its long) tires him out ....i hope i sort of helped.....hope things work out for you :)
