My little guy is now 8 weeks, 2 Days old as I was wondering how long exactely is the recommended amount of sleep they should be having.

Some days he tends to sleep alot where others it seems like he is awake constantly.

In a 24hr period, he should be sleeping 16-20 hours. However, some babies are already sleeping less than that (very few are still sleeping like newborns, up to 22 hours). Now, depending on his feeding, he may sleep up to 10 hours at night already. But it still isn't uncommon (especially in breast-fed babies) to still be waking every 2-4 hours at night.

Chances are, it won't be too long before yours sleeps "through the night" (which is 6 hours for a baby) since it sounds like he's really working out the whole day/night thing by staying awake a lot some days. Both of my daughters started figuring out day and night, and were drinking 36oz+/day and within a few days, started sleeping through the night (6-9 hours) within a week. I don't know if it was figuring out day and night, or if it was taking a certain amount of formula that did it, though.

If you are wanting to get him to sleep longer at night, you can try waking him during the day every 2-3 hours from naps and giving more milk at a time. It seems that once they start sleeping 5 hours at a time, it isn't long before they sleep 6-10. For mine, it only took a week to go from 5 hours to real, full nights of sleep. The key to night time sleeping seems to be not waking them, and because infants do make lots of noise many times, if they wake up, give them a few minutes and see if they will go back to sleep before heading to the kitchen to get the milk ready.

I can't say for sure that will work for yours, but loose scheduling of waking every 2-3 hours and allowing them to sleep through the night worked great for both of mine. My oldest slept through the night at 3wks and my 7wk old has been since she was 5wks old. Both do drink LOTS of formula, though. I started my oldest on cereal at 5 wks (after she started sleeping through the night), and my youngest at 4wks. I don't give my youngest cereal every day (she hasn't had any cereal in about 5 days now)...only the days where she will be taking more than 36oz; it's an effort to help her be more satisfied because she will take so much formula she just spits it up. It's not to help her sleep.

Kelley, how do you get yours to sleep 6 - 10 hours at night? I'd kill for a solid 6 hours of sleep. If he makes it 4.5 - 5 hours I'm lucky. 4 hours at night is his usual.

I've been wondering that myself. My son is 8 weeks tomorrow. He sleeps 6-10 hours a night, and takes 2 or 3 naps a day which go from 1-3 hours!!! Then there are days when he only naps twice for maybe an hour. His sleep schedule can be so random!
