I am curious as to what other moms thoughts are on when to transition your child out of a crib and into a toddler bed or a big kid bed?

my 15mth son sleeps in our bed most of the night and hates his crib. we have a 4-in1 crib so tomorrow we are converting the crib into the toddler bed with the guard rail. they recommend not doing that until they are 15 months old or older.

my son is 15months. we switched him as soon as he learned to climb up and down safely on his own. he's been in a toddler bed for almost a month now and is doing great =-)

Yep once my little one was able to walk around on his own and climb up and down for himself, he's sleeping in an adult's queen bed. But I choose an adult bed that is VERY low on the ground and the sides are all padded. So he can climb in and out when ever he wants without the worry of him hurting himself. The bad side is... he can get up and go do mischief if you are not aware and he has become a bed hog... lol. I guess its all the big bed space makes him accustomed to having all of the room to himself.

The best part now is he gets himself up in the morning. The worst part is sometimes keeping him in at night is a problem. But last night was super cute as he got out, grabbed his owl stuffed toy named Hoot and walked out to us saying, "Hoot hoot, hoot hoot!". How could I be mad at that cuteness! Fun days :)

I transitioned my daughter to a toddler bed when she started climbing out of her crib and I intend to do the same with my other 2.

oh and if you're worried about them wandering around at night, you can put up a gate so they can't leave their rooms in the middle of the night.

My son has been in his toddler bed since he was 12 months old, he's been in in 4 months nearly now and his sleeping so much better now! I agree with most people, it's all dependant on living space and arrangements :) Good luck though, hope it's as easy as it was for me!

I moved my son out of his crib about 3 months after he turned two. He wasn't trying to climb out or anything, but I was pregnant, so I knew I was going to need the crib for the baby in a couple months, and we found a good deal on a bedroom set for him, so we went ahead and moved him, and he did great. We never used a toddler bed, just moved him into a twin bed. My 15 month old is still in her crib, and I don't see us moving her out of it any time soon. I just don't see a need for it yet. We'll switch her crib to the toddler bed when she's ready.

i dont plan to transition my son until he's starts to try and climb out. he's pretty timid so he hasn't climbed up much of anything so he doesn't have the idea yet. he's only in there to sleep and only wakes in the morning now and from nap he's making noise straight away. we dont give him much time in there to get creative!

Our son is 15 months and still in a crib. My husband wants to transit him to a toddler bed once he tries to climb out of the crib. He isn't at that stage yet, and he loves to run around and be destructive around his room, so I am hoping that he doesn't learn how to climb out of the crib for a while yet, as I would hate to wake up every morning to him running around his room with everything a mess from what he has pulled off the shelves, etc.

We moved our little munchkin to a proper bed, a big boy single bed at 14 months and he's done GREAT!! I'm pg with #2 due in July/Aug so we wanted to try a bed rather than buy a 2nd cot. If he hadn't done well we would've bought a new cot. But he's done wonderfully well! At first we lined the floor with big lounge seats and pillows. He fell out a couple of times but was perfectly fine. Now he is great! He climbs out safely, we lay with him and read to him to go to sleep which is wonderful. Overall, I have no regrets and feel excited to have made this step!

I was suggested at a year old to get my son used to his bed. He turns two at the end of the month and we are still working on getting him used to the toddler bed. He learned how to get his foot over the top of his crib so to prevent him from climbing over we got him a bed. Would have had one sooner but money troubles prevented it. If they are able to walk and get into the bed Ive heard it the best time to try. Good luck

Only when it is necessary for safety or size reasons. I would rather he was safe in a cot as he is a complete menace.
Ben was 2 1/2, Mattie was nearly 2. He was only moved beacause I was about to give birth adn I felt that was young.

I put our girls in toddler beds at 12 and 13 months. One of them was trying to climb into the other crib and it was safer to transition her rather than have her straddle the beds. The other refussed to go in her crib once she realized her sister wasn't in one. It really depends on your situation and how you feel.

My eldest daughter who is now 6 was put in a toddler bed at age 3, (she is very small for her age), My son was 18 months old when he was put into a toddler bed. Both my eldest were moved out of the cot, because I fell pregnant with their sibling. My youngest who is nearly 15 months, went into a toddler bed about a month ago. The only reason she was put into a bed was because she refused to sleep in her cot, anytime u tried to put her in it she would scream, so to save my sanity of her sleeping with me every night, i put her into a toddler bed and now only have to spend a couple of hours in the morning with her in bed with us!!

My oldest ( b/g twins) were 21 months old when we switched them because they started to try and climb out of their cribs, and I was pregnant with their little brother. The twins will be three in June and my youngest one in July.

I'm going to switch my youngest once he starts to try and climb out of his crib too.

My daughter was 14 months old when she came out of her toddler bed. She simply would not stay in her crib and it was more dangerous for her to stay in there than not. However, my son was about 19 months old and the only reason why we switched him was because his crib was recalled in the "drop side crib" thing recently and neither my husband or I felt safe keeping him in it but could not justify buying another crib at his age. I remember my mom saying my sister was almost four years old when she came out of the crib! Like anything else with a child, you'll probably just know. :-)

Hi there,
My other 2 kids went into their toddler beds at 1 year. Basically it's when they can walk on their own when you can start trying for the toddler bed!!! My youngest is 15 months and I put him into his toddler bed about 2 weeks ago, that's when he first started walking.... he was a late walker!!!! So far it's going good... the first couple of nights he'd fall of his bed, but I would put a comfy comforter and blankets so he wouldn't hurt himself, and I'd pick him up and put him back on his bed! Now he's a pro and he's up on his own too!!
