Sleeping through the night...some day

Our 19 wk old is still not consistantly sleeping through the night - he'll have a few nights of sleeping through & then be back to his waking 2 or 3 times at night. When he wakes I will go in & give him back his pacifier & then leave - he'll fall back to sleep, but I'm still hoping this will taper off & he'll get into a more consistant sleeping routine.

We've tried dream feeding- he wakes every time & makes is harder to put him down again, his bedtime is between 7-8pm, we have a consistant bedtime routine including bath & story, we swaddle him - this works to help with falling alseep. I've tried keeping him up longer in the day, reducing his naps - no consistant benefit, tried increasing his formula to make sure he gets his max calorie intake during the day so he's not hungry at night - again no consistant benefit.

What are others experiencing, have you tried? Anyone else dealing with the same thing?

First off, I LOVE your picture! It is the most adorable newborn picture I think I've ever seen! Very unique! That being said....I feel like I have been very blessed with my son's sleeping habits. At 2 weeks, he was getting up maybe once or twice during the night, but not consistently. Then I started with our own little routine that I feel has worked like magic ever since!! I feed him around 8, then bathe him immediately after, using a "relaxing baby bedtime soap", then do the usual "pampering" to keep him nice and soft, and fresh! Then we'll just have relaxing time, where I sing to him, and he's starting to sing back now!! I find stories 'wind' him up too much, and he thinks it's play time! He loves musice though, and I actually have a song I made up that he LOVES and as soon as I start to sing it, he knows it's time for bed and will shut his little eyes! So cute! Then I feed him again at 11, usually a little bit bigger bottle than others during the day. For the most part he goes right down after his bottle's gone. He may wake up 1-2 more times, but only right when I lay him down. He is out for the night no later than 12. Then he'll sleep until 9 or 930!!! I hope you find a schedule soon, I know it's rough trying to find one that works well for you AND baby! Good luck!

My daughter was on the 29th Sep 09 and was sleeping through the night at 3 weeks old and is still sleeping through now and she is now 4 months.

Our little guy hasn't made it more than 5 hours more than once. He is up 1 to 3 times EVERY night. I hear babies sleep a lot... not this one. He naps 2 to 4 hours during the day if I;m lucky, then sleeps from 10 or 11pm until 6 or 7 am. He;s a skinny little thing, too, but very strong and eats like a horse (solids twice daily). Can't find anything to settle him into a routine!

I have found that reducing daytime sleeping only makes the nighttime situation worse because the baby is overtired. What I did with my daughter was establish a bedttime routine and when I put her to bed--in a co-sleeper--I repeatedly put the pacifier back in and jiggled the bed. I think I had to do this for 45 minutes the first couple nights, but then the "jiggling" time diminishd and now I can put her down with minimal effort. It was frustrating the first few nights, but I knew that if I was patient and stuck it out it would be worth it.

Breathe deeply and "jiggle"--Good Luck!
