my son is now 6months and he has cerel mixed with fruit apples, pears or peaches 1 hour after his 1st bottle. 1 hour after his 2nd bottle he has fruit and veg (pumpkin, sweetpotato, potato, carrots zucchini or a mixture of some) and then some fruit. 1hr-2hrs after the 3rd bottle he has a serve of fruit and a serve of veg. i started him on solids at 4months which is acceptable in australia and he naps a lot longer during the day. i really recommend making your own food as I did with this baby and my first as it is so easy, cheaper and there are no hidden additves or preservatives. I just steam up my fruit or veg, freeze it in icecubetrays then put it into snaplock bags. I just take out what I need everyday and heat it up in the microwave. It's much healthier and cheaper than the crap that comes in the jars!! Good luck.

My daughter is almost 5 1/2 months and she eats 5 oz w/ cereal at usually 6-7am then when she wakes up at 9-10am she will eat one 5 oz bottle.. then her next feeding is at lunch time and she will eat half a veggie & half a fruit with cereal mixed in with 1 oz of formula to wash it down, then will have another 5 oz bottle 3-5 hrs later.. then the next feeding is dinner time and she eats the other half of the fruit/veggie mixed with cereal and the 1 oz of formula.. and to put her to bed, we do about 7oz of formula with cereal in the bottle and she will sleep 8-9 hours & then start all over again :)

Hahahaha a bit of everything!!! One day he eyed up my roast dinner and then screamed his head off when I tried to give him his bottle so I tried some baby rice and over the last month I've tried fruit and vegetable purees, cereals, toast to suck on, yoghurts and even mashed down versions of what my other 3 children aged 12, 31mth and 21mth old eat. It was cauliflower, broccolli, cheesy mashed potato and fish finger (minus coating) the other night. I try to be laid back about it as babies tend to let you know when they're not ready or don't like something. At the other end of the scale at 5 and a half months some babies are quite happy to survive soley on breastmilk so each to their own.

Hi Emily, sounds like it's the same then for solids. We did start our son (who is now 4) on solids about 5 1/2 months as he wasn't able to breastfeed :(
The reason I'm giving my daughter water is I was reading a book called Save Our Sleep by Tizzie Hall and she suggests that water is a good idea for babies 4 months & older, as water is very good for everyone, but in small amounts ie: no more than 30ml between feeds. Jess has probably had about 20ml in total since we first gave it to her a couple of days ago. The other reason I gave it to her was she got a bit warm when we were out for the day and it got warmer than expected. We've only just gone into autumn here and the temp is still around 23 - 25celcius.

Currently the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends waiting until at least 6 months to start solids, but there are a lot of doctors who will still recommend earlier... especially for a formula-fed baby.

I'm curious though... why are you starting on water? I didn't introduce any extra fluids until closer to 9 months...

[deleted account]

breastmilk, and we're just starting to introduce her to boiled water. In Australia the current reccommendation is not to start solids until at least 6 months, and the understanding is also breastmilk is all they need. Is it different in other countries??

i think it just depends on the baby if they should have any solids before 6 months. if the baby enjoys it and gobbles it right up whats the harm? when i was a baby it was normal to start solids a lot earlier than 6 months, most people did and it hasnt hurt us?? some babies wont be interested in it before 6 months tho i guess.

You really shouldnt start anything besides formula before 6 months..there tummy's are not advanced enough until then..My daughter is just now 6 months but at 5 months she was just eating 8 ounces every 4 hours durin the day and sleeping 10-12 hours a night

my bubba is 6 months old and loves his yogurt and fruit puree's , he also eats the stage 1 vegies that you buy in the jars. my sister made up a whole lot of fresh vegie puree's for her son and made me a heap too which i froze enough for a serving in a freezer bag and would just take one or 2 out the day before. having trouble getting him to eat anything that isnt completely runny tho. he dry reaches and sometimes throws it all back up. have been trying to get him to eat the stage 1 fruit musli wich is a little lumpy, but no success so today i watered it down a bit and he ate it no probs. anyone else had trouble with lumpy foods??

My son born Sept 4, 2009 (26 weeks now) eats: 5-6 oz every 3 hours (5x per day). Eats rice cereal (1 1/2 TBSP mixed with baby water) in morning between bottles. Then an ice cube size of vegie at night between 4th and final bottle. He LOVES organic peas. But we've also had sweet potatoes, carrots and squash so far (all organic). Each vegie is eaten for 5 days to make sure we don't have an allergy. We will continue this for the next month. Then we introduce pureed meat (doc told me this yesterday --he suggested to start with turkey) at 7 mos! We will eat three times per day starting at 8 mos.

My twins will be 6 months on the 14th. They are strictly breastfed and will continue to be for another month or two. They are not sitting yet (because they spend too much time trying to crawl), and only one of them has teeth. We have delayed solids with our other children until 7-9 months and we will do so for our boys also.

I've never done jarred foods at all with any of my kids. Way too expensive & time consuming, and not necessary for a breastfed baby. We just stick with breastmilk until they can eat table food with us.

My daughter is five months and three weeks. She eats oatmeal with bananas mixed in for breakfast, and a veggie at lunch and dinner. She eats 1-2oz of veggies for lunch and dinner. She is breastfed every two hours, so I don't know the ounces on that. She really loves her veggies though. I'm going to start adding fruits soon, I just wanted her to get a variety of veggies before I give her sweet fruits. They usually don't like veggies if you give them fruit first so I've held off on the fruits.

Our pedi told us to not bother trying veggies and fruits before six months, and just recommended starting our daughter on cereal. She wasn't a fan of the rice, so we give her a little bit of oatmeal mixed with breastmilk or soy formula. About 70% of her nutrition comes from breastfeeding or pumped breastmilk, and the other 30% is soy formula and/or oatmeal. We are planning on making her baby food once she starts on some more serious solids...we are excited!

Sorry, editing to add amounts! Olivia gets a five-ounce bottle or both breasts about every three hours, except through the night. She usually stays asleep now from about 9:00 pm to at least 4:30 am, some nights she will go to as late as 6:30, so she obviously isn't feeding then. When we give her oatmeal, we actually put it in the bottle with her breastmilk/formula with some extra water added to make it very thin, so she can still get it through the nipple. We use a formula scoop full of oatmeal in a six-ounce bottle.

Olivia is in the 95th percentile for height and weight, and she is as solid as a little stone (i.e she's not overweight), so it seems to be working well!

Hi Ashtin Weyant. Thats awesome! lol, I thought my baby girl was a piggy just from the amount of cereal she eats and then able to polish off a 7 ounce bottle! (of course I mix the bottle formula I will feed her with the cereal) but, my baby is so big...not fat, but long! very long. Cant believe she was born a month early that one. Having a bit of a bet with the family on how much she weighs now. Everyone is around the 20 lbs mark. She is 6 months on the 6th of March.

My son Kaiden was only 6lbs 12 oz at birth, and at his 4 month check-up he was 17lbs!! He is now 5 months 1 week and he doesn't go back to the doc for another couple weeks, but it's my guess he is up to 18lbs. Anyway, Kaiden has a 6 oz bottle when he wakes up, around 7:30am. He usually has rice cereal around lunch and 2 more 6 oz bottles during the day. He has another bowl of rice cereal around 6pm, then another 6 oz bottle when he goes to bed at 8pm. I am going to start veggies today because he has so much interest in food, and he has been eating cereal for about a month.

My little man started @ 10lbs 1 oz, he's now almost 18lbs! He eats 5-6 five (+/-) ounce bottles a day and 2 tbsp rice cereal for lunch and then 2 tbsp cereal w/ 1/2 jar baby fruit or veggie. We had some baby food given to us, and there is a lot of stage one meats, such as ham, turkey, etc. I'm curious when I can start giving him these, anyone know?

My daughter eats a fruit mixed with avocado at lunch and then in the evening she eats a vegetable mixed with rice cereal. I only give her 1/3 of a container of the fruit/vegetable. I give her a tbsp of avocado because it's very good for babies and makes up for the missing formula and helps with her brain development. For the cereal I give her 1/2 tbsp of dry mixed with enough formula to make it sticky and then mix the vegetable in and that makes it a little less thick.

Is she sleeping through the night? If not and you would like her to, I would advise moving the afternoon feeding to a dinner feeding instead. Just to make sure that dinner is a few hours before bed so she has a chance to digest, get gas out, dirty the diaper, you know the fun stuff! LOL Or just add dinner time to what you are doing already. Listen to your child, each one is different, she should be telling you at dinner time when everyone else is eating if she wants to too! My lil guy is 5 mths. and he only eats cereal in the morning and at night, and I nurse him during the day. Take a day and try adding the extra meal to her day and see how it goes! Hope this helps!

He was showing all the signs he was ready so dr said go for it and see how he does. Liam is so much happier now that he gets food. You can tell the days he gets bottles and no food because he's miserable he loves his solids. He usually eats 4 oz for breakfast, lunch and dinner with bottles before naps and at night

my daughter is 24weeks, i started giving her rice cereal and banana at 18weeks, and have moved on to avacardo, apples, pears, pumpkin, patato, carrot, apricot, mango, and corn, I make everything myself it is really easy, all u have to do it peel, slice and steam untill soft, then i blend it and put it in the freezer in ice cube trays, it takes about 10mins and i have food for 2 weeks,( i do 3 trays at a time) i give her three feeds a day breakfast lunch and dinner (each feed is 2 ice cubes) the thing to remember when starting foods is just give them one food at a time for 3days so if they have a reaction you know what food has caused it. My daughter also has 4 bottles of formula every day 8oz (240mls) I have followed the Tizzie Hall book save our sleep which has been a god send. it has helped making good sleeping and feeding routines :)

I would say we are still 95%+ breast milk, but this kid has been hungry since day one and was looking and grabbing our food. He seems happy to have some variety! He has also had avocado and humus to taste. Liked it. We are way more adventurous with this one. Our 4 year old boy was by the book and is a very picky eater. Who knows?
