My baby is 8 months old he only weighs 17 lbs. I have been breastfeeding him since birth and he eats 3 meals a day, the doctor says at his 9 month check up (July 16th) if he doesn't gain some weight he will have to have formula. What should I do i don't want to give him formula, should i just ignore the doctor......

I am still breastfeeding my 9 month old and she is just over 17lbs as long as you think he is content and healthy he is just fine. these dr.'s all go by charts instead of the child themselves, you go by your baby, not a chart.

dont stress my little boy is the same age and weighs only about 300g more then your little one i moved to bottle feeding about 2 months ago because i was worried about him not getting enough or gaining weight the way they are "supposed" to i have realised that all babies are different and are build different like adults so dont stress to much just take medical advice if there are complications maybe see a pediatrician as they specialise in babies? ?

I've never had a good milk supply, so my son (born Oct.14) has always had both formula supplement and breast milk. Your little guy does not sound small (in a worrysome way!) My son is 19 lbs. and pretty solid! IGNORE that Dr. and breastfeed as long as possible! Sounds like you are doing everything right!

My son will be 9 months on the 11th. He is just at 20lbs but he is also almost 30inches tall. So he looks skinny but not unhealthy. His pediatrician told me to give him as many calories as i can.

I wouldn't just ignore the dr. they are just concerned about your sons weight gain too. Address your concerns about formula feeding to the dr. Try to check the # of calories in his meals and see if you can boost how many he is getting. I know bananas and sweet potatoes have a lot. And the turkey w/rice and mac and cheese have a lot also.

We should start a support group for our small babies!!! LOL My son will be 9 months on the 11th and he weights 16 lbs. He is gaining weight (slowly...about a pound a month) and he is meeting all of his milestones (some early) so his pediatrician says not to be concerned. I breast feed and bottle (formula/rice mix) feed him, along with 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. I couldn't imagine feeding him anymore! It does make me sad when people comment on how tiny he is or how their 5 month old weights more.

My son is 18lbs born oct 25th but he is 28.5in tall! I get gripe from people all the time saying he is too skinny...but they dont realize he is like what 4in or so taller than babies his age. He has 7 teeth and eats those little gradaute meals 2x a day atleast 4 8oz and fruit and cereal for breakfast plus if i am eating i give him that. He just is very active and has a high matobolism.

My baby weighs that much and she is on formula. I think the doctor is bulling you. is he on baby food too?

Don't worry my son was only 16lb 9oz at his 8 month check - his health visitor is not concerned with his weight gain. As long as your baby has demonstrated healthy weight gain at his weigh ins there should not be a problem. Good on you for BF this long, rather than switching to formula as you give the impression you don't want to maybe you could try giving your son more high calorie foods to eat and as my health visitor suggested use your breast milk to mix with baby porridge mix as you are then giving extra milk to your son.

As for switching to formula I have to say that my son was not putting on much weight when I BF (only 3 wks because my milk dried up as he was not latching) he did flourish when he went onto formula as he was getting more substantial amounts of milk.

just be careful because if they are underweight it can be a sign of a more serious problem, like they are not processing the nutrients they take in. i would ask the doctor why they think he is underweight and what they are worried about if he is.

Congratulations for breastfeeding until now, I couldn't because of my medication and I was so disappointed. Callie was 8 months on 25th October and she only weighs 16lbs. She eats really well and drinks all of her milk, I have been told as long as she has wet nappies, seems well and reaches reasonable milestones I have nothing to worry about. Take no notice you're doing a great job!

My daughter went to the dr's for a check up at 8 months and she was 17.5 pounds and her dr. told us that that was right in the middle of average for 8 months and that she is doing great for her age. I just looked up on several websites and it says the average weight for a 8-9months old is 15.6-24 pounds. I am assuming that this is either correct or very close to correct from what my daughters dr. told me.

thats weird your doctor would say that, breast milk is best and babies that are breast fed tend to weigh less so im sure hes just fine. my daughter is 9 months and weighs 17 lbs

Thank you to the moms who responded you have somewhat put some of my concerns at bay, I don't think I am going to put my son on formula ( he wont take a bottle anyway).

here we just had kelsey's weight checked and she is only 18lbs and does have formula and 3 meals of solids as lisa said if he is still active and peeing well don't listen they don't everything.
also what was birth weight and height is he tall and thin did he double his birth weight at the 6month mark these are things that i was told to look for i was thinking kelsey was really small up against the others in our play group. but she is very tall and slim so i try not to worry

Wow. At least your baby is 17 pounds. My son just turned 8 months and he is only 15 pounds. His doctor thinks he is underweight but won't do anything until his 9 month check up. I have been really concerned about Colton. My opinion is that if you are worried about your son, I would take the doctors advice, cause they know what to look for. Then again my son has always been on formula, and he is still small. So, I don't know if formula will help.

Is he active? Still hitting milestones? Peeing frequently enough (5-6 wets a day)? If yes, I'd ignore your doctor.

You may want to decrease solids and increase BM, though. Your milk has more calories than food, so he may be filling up with less calories.
