Can they miss twins in an ultrasound?

I went to the doctors 2 weeks ago for an ultrasound. My husband was betting that I was 10-11 weeks and I was guessing 12-14 weeks because of my size and symptoms. I was nervous that we would find twins, identicals run in both sides of my family (mom and dad) for the last 100 years or so. I already have a 5 year old son so I have been pregnant before and it was not nearly as intense as this one. Anyway, the doctor did a probe ultrasound and decided that the fetus size put me at 8 weeks. I'm huge for 8 weeks and that means that my pregnancy test came out positive when I was 3 1/2 weeks along.... And it was a solid positive in 20-30 seconds, which to me doesnt seem right. I still think its twins, is it possible they missed one in the ultrasound? And is the embryo/fetus for twins always smaller than a single pregnancy, perhaps explaining why the size only came in at 8 weeks when really I'm further along?
