Concerned and Scared about Ultrasound!

This is a rather LONG story but I’ll try to keep it short. After months of trying to get health insurance and being denied to see doctors because I was too far along I finally found a doctor that would take me as a self pay patient until January when my insurance goes through. Needless to say, it has been hectic and stressful.

I had my first appointment yesterday. I am 23.5 weeks and had an ultrasound done. I’ve been very anxious for it because I’ve had mother’s intuition, dreams, and fears that I am carrying more than one baby. This pregnancy is NOTHING like my first and the movement is insane. My doctor didn’t want to do the pap, blood work, etc. because the health insurance issue plus my son was absolutely horrible. (I completely understand his reasoning.)

Let me begin by describing the ultrasound technician. She had several different colored highlights (nothing against that as I am a cosmetologist), a logo tee-shirt, and jeans on. Everyone else working in the office was much more professional. During the ultrasound she said two things, “yup, there is the baby” and “yeah, theres the balls…er I mean the testicles are right here.” What I am getting at is that she seemed like she was fresh out of school. Not having time to really examine the photos until I got home I ran across 3 different ones of the “same” baby. One photo looks just like my son, the other one has a more pronounced forehead and jaw line. The 3rd one I had to say, looks like an underdeveloped fetus. The measurements are also confusing me. Some say the baby is in the 70% and others say the 30%. What also gets me is that she moved from the baby (at the bottom with the head down) up to a completely different area and found him again. Plus, my husband and I thought we saw her quickly scan over 3 arms here, I thought I may have seen a head in the background.
I’m scared. I don’t have another appointment until the 13th of January. What would you do? Should I call my doctor and tell him I want to be seen again? Or should I just let it go for now and bring up all of my concerns on the 13th? Please Help.

The doctor called my Dad. I'm actually confused about this because I told my father to tell him I was concerned and yet he called him...... Anyway, he said the baby is measuring normally. Even though the ultrasound tech said "really small". He didn't say really big though so I'm still not understanding the upper right rib lower left groin kicks. Thats okay...I'll find out soon. If it is just one lone boy well he is an athlete already lol.

Lol, just try to take it easy one day at a time. I know it's easier said than done but try not to stress over it. Whatever happens is a blessing in disguise. I have my two and a half year old b/g twins and an almost five and a half month old son.

Thanks Caroline,my father saw him on Sunday and voiced my concerns to him. He said he would look over them again and get back to me. I'm just not sure if a doctor knows where the ultrasound photo was taken from.
Thanks Liz, it is nice to know that I'm not alone in this insurance issue. Its been so hard trying to emotionally deal with not knowing. Then when my appointment didn't confirm or erase my feeling of more than one I've been losing my mind slowly more and more each day. LOL - stupid pregnancy hormones all messed up

I'd deffinently call and see if you can get ahold of your dr and explain your concerns to him. Tell him of the techs attitude and see if you can't get another scan soon. Especally if you are carrying multiples then you shouldn't be stressing out about it. I have a set of two and a half year old b/g twins. I didn't find out until almost 18 weeks I was having twins because of insurance issues it took a while to find a doctor so I know what you're going through with that. If you need to talk don't hesitate to contact me. I also have a five month old son.

Janelle,
I was happy to respond, even though I don't know how helpful I was! :) I would love to know the outcome when you know!

That really is a tough one to answer, but I would give the doctor some time to look it over, because regardless, he is going to have to look at those pictures and make sure everything is on the up n up. The way my doctors office works is after an ultrasound the doctor within the next week will go over the pictures and determine if everything is ok or not.. ex: due date doesn't change, size looks correct, no abnormalities.
If something changes, then they call you, if not they just wait to talk about it all at the next appointment. If you are concerned with the way the ultrasound went, then I would give your doc a week to call and if you don't hear back, just leave a message with him to confirm everything is OK. Surely he would understand considering it was your first appointment and ultrasound.

Good luck!

First of all, thank you so much for responding. We have not listened to the heartbeat through the doctor. During the ultrasound she did. To me and my husband we thought we could hear another one besides the one she focused on and of course could hear my slower heart beat in the background. Fortunately, the doctor is someone my father knows and he put me as a "self pay" but are not collecting anything due to the promise that my insurance goes through on the first. That also means that I probably couldn't go anywhere else...had a hard enough time finding him. :) We did ask the tech during the ultrasound a few times, "So, it is only one then?" She completely ignored us. I'll try to get a hold of him on Monday and ask if he could push my appointment up from the 13th to the very begining on January. I'm just scared out of my mind because of the photo that looks like a 16 week fetus and not a 23 week.

Oh man, Jannelle, that is a tough one. Obviously, you don't want to upset your new doctor. While it seems like your tech was a bit immature, it would seem like she knows what she's doing... Remember, I said SEEM! I don't know. Have you told your doc that you think you may be carrying more than one? Have you listened to the heartbeat/heartbeats? Could you pay for another one out of pocket somewhere? I realize that might be pretty expensive, but it could be worth checking into. Did you have a chance to ask the tech any questions? Sorry, I realize that I may just be loading you up with additional questions, and I realize that is not what you are looking for. If you are going to talk to the doc, I would do it sooner than later with the holidays coming! :) My best to you and your family!
